R. Nathan said: There is no love like the love for the Torah, no wisdom like the wisdom of the land of Israel, no beauty like the beauty of Jerusalem, no wealth like the wealth of Media, no might like the might of Persia, no immorality like that of the Arabs, no arrogance like the arrogance of Elam, no hypocrisy like the hypocrisy of Babylon, as it is stated, And he said unto me: To build her a house in the land of Shinar, and no magic like the magic of Egypt.Avot D'Rabbi Natan 28:1

It is forbidden to rebuke him or to raise your voice at him because his heart is broken and crushed and it says "a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou dost not despise." And it says "to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones." Woe is he who shames a poor person, woe is he! Rather be like a father to him, both in mercy and in words as it says "I was a father to the needy"Mishneh Torah, Gifts to the Poor 10:5

R. Simeon said: Such is the penalty of a liar, that even when he speaks the truth he is not believed; for we find it so with the sons of Jacob. When they first lied to their father he believed them, as it is stated, And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a he-goat; and it is written, And he knew it, and said: It is my son’s coat. But finally, although they spoke the truth to him, he did not believe them, as it is stated, And they told him, saying: Joseph is yet alive … And his heart fainted, for he believed them not. Some say that the Holy Spirit, which had departed from our father Jacob [during his grieving for Joseph], now settled upon him, as it is stated, The spirit of Jacob their father revived.Avot D'Rabbi Natan 30:4

Another explanation of "with all thy might [meodeka]" — with whatever measure [middah] He metes out to thee, do Thou return Him thanks [modeh].Berakhot 54a:6
