Love of The Holy one, blessed be He: There is no better trait than the Love of The Holy one, blessed by He, for the entire service of G-d and Judaism draws from it. To serve (G-d) from love is not comparable to serving from fear, as the author of the "Sefer HaBris" delved and expounded to explain the root of love and fear very well. "The words of the mouth of the wise is grace" (Ecclesiastes 10:12). Praiseworthy is the man who is diligent with his words. To make habit the work which is before me I will come in short, and I will write some notes for myself and for others in my condition, according to that which I learned from the book quoted earlier ("Sefer HaBris") and other books which I have seen to be a reminder between my eyes, and may G-d the Almighty assist me in the matter of honoring His name.

Entry 2
Self-love - for it is a nature in man that the Creator instilled within him, that he should love himself. And [every] man is closer to himself and loves himself more than the entire world and than everything in the world, for everything a man has he will give for his life. But there is a grievous evil — that of the evil inclination — that holds ones eyes closed and makes him as if he were drunk and ill and can’t distinguish between left and right, and causes himself harm. From soul to flesh it consumes him in a way that no enemy in the world could possibly do more evil to him than he does to himself, and this is great folly. And in truth it says (Sotah 3:1): “There is no man who sins until a spirit of folly comes upon him”. Someone who is a fool, sometimes a foolishness will come upon them that causes them to destroy themselves intentionally [commit suicide], may we be rescued from this. And whoever has a brain in their skull will take to heart that it is proper for man to love his body and soul, [and through this] a good reward will be gathered for his toil — his soul will delight in abundance and his flesh, too, will dwell securely.

Entry 3
The love of sons and daughters: The love of sons and daughters is necessitated by nature, for they are the bone from his bone and flesh from his flesh, and even "a raven cares for its children" (Ketubot 49b). But one must take care that his love does not overturn boundaries, that he does not make his son suffer and longs for him greatly and gives him extra love. Shlomo has already said in his wisdom (Proverbs 13:24) "One who spares his rod hates his son, but one who loves him rebukes him." And the essence of love is love of the soul, and included in this is love of oneself, for "the son gives merit to the father" (Sanhedrin 104a). As it is written (ibid 29:17): "Punish your son and he will give delicacies to your soul." Therefore, a person should be careful to behave with his son with open rebuke and hidden love, according to what he understands in his youth. "Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a youth, a rod of rebuke will distance him from it" (ibid 22:15). But the father should take care not to be cruel to his child and not to hit him and give him a bruise out of anger. Rather he should lead him with gentleness and with mercy he should hit his legs, not on a place where he will sustain a wound like between the eyes. And when he is older, "a rebuke enters deeper into a man of understanding" (ibid 17:10). And it is known (Moed Katan 17a): that he who hits his adult son transgresses because of the sin of putting a stumbling block before a blind person, etc. This does not refer to an actual adult, rather according to the son's understanding and character traits" when he is older and does not accept rebuke, "a soft tongue breaks the bone" (Proverbs 25:15) and he will not be lenient in his own honor so that his reputation will not be ruined. And he [the father] needs to be even more careful with that which our rabbi cautioned (Shabbat 10b): One should not teach his son when he is among other boys, for "jealousy is as difficult as the grave" (Song of Songs 8:6). The principle is: according to the mental ability and character traits of the son is how a father needs to behave with him in a way that he will not sin. If he does sin against him, he should be quick to forgive him so his son will not be punished on account of him, and he should not be exacting with them, and sometimes he should make himself like a deaf person who does not hear and as if he does not see, and sometimes he should submit his will to their will. And this is a major principle for one who wants to bring merit to his soul and the souls of his sons after him.

Entry 4
And one also needs to strengthen himself to arouse his love [for his wife] so that his children will not be the children of a hated wife, G-d forbid, and “according to the pain is the reward” (Avot 5:23). And the fence to prevent disputes from arising in the home is to not examine every household expenditure down to the penny, for a woman who is jealous of her peer is as difficult as Sheol [the grave]. Therefore, a man should increase the honor of his home as he is blessed, each thing in its [proper] time, and appease his wife, for blessing does not rest in a home except for the sake of his wife (Bava Metzia 59a). And peace at home is important to the point that it is permissible to dissolve the Great Name [of Hashem] to bring peace between man and wife (Nedarim 66b). Therefore one should greatly strengthen himself to remove evil from his home and to induce the Shekhinah to enter it.

Entry 5
Love of Torah scholars and those who fear heaven and contemplate His name — Love of Torah scholars, those who fear heaven, and contemplate His name also stems from love of G-d, for one who has a faithful friend, he also loves his [the friend’s] children and household. And furthermore since he deeply loves his friend and seeks his welfare with all his soul and all his heart, everyone who benefits and brings satisfaction to his friend he also loves. And further, we have already said that reason obligates anyone who is similar to him to love an admirable person, perfect in character and understanding—whether he himself possesses admirable qualities, or merely loves perfection even though it is not present in him. Thus, for all these reasons, it is considered proper [lit. they sought] to arouse love for Torah scholars, those who fear Hashem, and those who contemplate his name (Malachi 13:15), so they should be as dear [to him] as the pupil of his eye. And behold the reward of this, as our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Shabbat 23b): “He who loves the rabbis, will have children who are rabbis”. And the essence of love is in the heart, but one needs to also express it with action. If Hashem increases his means, he should support Torah scholars with all his soul and might [wealth], and he should both act and cause others to act. And if he doesn’t have the means, in any case he should personally fullfill [the principle that it is] “greater to serve [a Torah scholar than to study under one]” with all his strength such that [the scholar] will be able to observe the Torah and do his service without difficulty. And great is one who causes others to act, more on which will be written below. And it goes without saying that one must guard his soul greatly to not pain a Torah scholar and [to ensure that] no Torah scholar finds a reason to resent him, as the teaching already elucidated (Pirkei Avot 2:10, Midrash Tanchuma Yitro 12): “come and warm yourself by the fire of the sages, but beware of being singed etc.”

Love of fellows - It is well-known how great a virtue love of neighbors is, to the point that our Rabbis of blessed memory said (Jerusalem Talmud Nedarim 9:4) “Love your neighbor as yourself” - this is a core principle of the Torah, and our Rabbis of blessed memory explained (Shabbat 31a): their intention is to say “what is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor”. And behold, in proportion to the greatness of the good [of this virtue], so too does a person’s evil inclination grow stronger against him all day, until, because of our sins, [particularly] through the sin of baseless hatred, our cities are destroyed, our Temple lies desolate, and we are exiled from our land. Yet the Satan still dances among us, accusing us. Every person turns to his own gain and does not worry about the misfortune of his fellow, and there are those who delight in their distress, and those who for the sake of enjoyment, however slight, swallow one another alive. Woe to the eyes that see such things! For our eyes will fail from waiting - we have waited for salvation, but there is no savior as long as this trait is found among us. And thus one must strengthen himself to arouse this love [for others]. And the particulars of love for one’s neighbors has already been explained extensively in “Sefer HaBerit”, and I will present it briefly. And it is, that one must rise to the principle of “turn from evil and do good” (Psalms 34:66): one must turn from evil in speech and actions.

Entry 7
Mourning - Mourning over the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash [the Temple] is something that depends on action, and especially during the period of the Three Weeks, by day and night [one should] place ashes on the place where the Tefillin are laid, sit beside the Mezuzah, and recite the order of the Tikkun Chatzot. In truth, the action is not the core [of mourning], rather one must have an eye that weeps bitterly and a broken and crushed heart — like one mourning for his mother, gloomy, he should sigh with “brokenness of the loins” [i.e. being crushed by grief] over the sorrow of Heaven. And all is proportional to one’s knowledge, greatness of love [of Heaven], and the reward of his soul. And see the truth is that we are greatly diminished, and there is no one among us who knows what we are lacking, what we have lost, what we have caused through our many sins, what the exile of the Shekhinah is like, and [the extent of] the suffering of the upper and lower beings. Over this, all who are sorrowful should grieve, [but] in any case every man isn’t obligated except according to his [own] capacity. And he should imagine as though his mother were girded with sackcloth, wearing black [garments] and wrapping herself in black [garments], crying out bitterly — a voice heard in Ramah [on high, but see Jeremiah 31:15 snd other verses] — moaning like a dove. What does the language say? (Sanhedrin 46a): “I am distressed about my head, I am distressed about my arm”. “I have reared and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me” (Isaiah 1:2). And like this and that the living should take to heart things that embitter the heart. He should pour out his soul with a wailing voice; perhaps he will merit to see the consolation of Zion and the rebuilding of our Temple and our glory, that it be speedily rebuilt in our days, Amen.

Faith - Faith, “it became the cornerstone” [Psalms 118:22]. For the one who has faith in Hashem, whose glory fills the whole Earth, and whose eyes are open upon all the ways of human beings, to repay each person according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds. A righteous person shall live through his faithfulness, because certainly he will be careful in the fulfillment of all the commandments and their precise details. And he should be eager in [performing] the commandments, and careful to be clean from every sin, and exert himself like a lion for the service of his Creator, and not back down in the face of anything. For his eyes will see, and his heart will understand, that the name of Hashem is called upon him, and His eyes range about the whole Earth. An eye sees, an ear hears, and all his deeds are recorded in a book [Avot 2:1]. And he should feel ashamed before him, and serve Him with a perfect service — with fear, love, and great joy. And he will believe with complete faith that there is a good reward for the righteous, according to the greatness of the deed, and according to the difficulty is the reward [Avot 5:23]. And the punishment for the wicked is severe and bitter, over all of their transgressions, and a balance and scales of justice are in the hand of Hashem, to repay each person according to his ways — according to his level, understanding, and ability, and according to the effort and the joy, as two battle lines are set opposite one another.

Eating and Drinking - Eating and drinking fall into three categories: commanded, permitted, and forbidden. And it is possible for one to make all of his meals a commanded meal when these conditions are met — conditions stated in truth by the Sages from whose mouths we live. The first is that he must intend in his eating that he should be healthy and strong for the service of G-d, blessed be His name, and to fulfill “the merciful man does good to his own soul” (Proverbs 11:17). That is to say, to separate out and bring to light all the sparks of holiness that are attached to everything he eats and that he drinks. And one must pray for his food before every meal, and this is a great obligation as explained in the Zohar (Exodus, page 62). (And I the insignificant one have arranged a text of prayer, to express the intentions we mentioned, because there is benefit in uttering them verbally, to help the heart remember. It will also help bring holiness upon the eating, especially [when] one’s intention is for the sake of Heaven, and I placed it in Beit Tefillat). And see what is written in the holy book “Reishit Chochmah” (Gate of Holiness Chapter 15), with one’s own eyes they will see the intentions of eating, which correspond in their measures with the sacrificial offerings. Happy is one born of a woman who has the means to build his upper chambers in the heavens through his meals, provided that he direct his heart toward Heaven, and do these things according to halakhah. And “one of clean hands will increase in strength” (Job 17:9) — [that is,] he should be careful with washing the hands properly according to the enactment of the Sages.

Truth - “The lip of truth shall be established forever” (Proverbs 12:19). And [truth] rescues from death, as is known from the Gemara (Sanhedrin 97a:6), in that place, whose name was “Truth”, [where] there were no lies and no man died before his time. And our Rabbis of blessed memory say (Sanhedrin 92a:19), that one who alters his words is regarded as one who worships idols, as it is written (Genesis 27:12) “and I shall seem to him a deceiver”. And Hashem is a G-d of truth, his seal is truth (Shabbat 55a:12), and his Torah is truth, and “the remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth” (Zephaniah 3:13). And there are many ignorant peoples, that have taught their tongue to speak falsehood, and it has become to them as though completely permissible, to the point that there are those who lie in meaningless stories, without any benefit [to themselves]. Concerning them the Scripture says, “woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood” (Isaiah 5:18). And when [the falsehood] is in order to obtain some benefit, such as [cheating] in measure or weight and the like, then it is not called “falsehood”, but rather “diligence”, “cleverness”, and “effort”. And they say that whoever does not lie nowadays will not be able to earn [a livelihood], but they have answered falsely [i.e. their claim is false]. For our Sages of blessed memory said, in the Midrash on Proverbs (Midrash Tehillim 7:11; see also Yalkut Shimoni, Exodus section 56 and Psalms section 638), when Noah entered the ark, falsehood also came to enter. [Noah] said to him, “go out and find yourself a mate”, for all who came into the ark came male and female. He went and searched, and found destruction. He said to her, “do you wish to marry me?” She said to him, “what will you give me?” He replied to her, “whatever I earn, I will give to you.” And from then onward, whatever Falsehood earns, Destruction takes for herself. And if the evil inclination has made [the matter] appear smooth and attractive in his eyes, and shows him that he profits greatly through falsehood, in the end, without doubt, loss will come upon him, as is written in the Prophets: “One who acquires wealth, but not justly — in the midst of his days he will leave it, and at his end he will be a fool” (Jeremiah 17:11). Or [it will be] wealth preserved for its owner to his detriment, in this world and in the World to Come, “and G-d will withhold no good from those who walk with integrity.” [Psalms 84:12].

Resoluteness - Resoluteness is a great necessity in the service of G-d, blessed be His name, for how many times does one violate the will of his creator due to a soft heart and pity. And a good man conducts his affairs justly (Psalms 112:5) according to the Torah and does not turn from the things that the Torah and the Rabbis of blessed memory command him [to do] to the left or to the right (Deutoronomy 17:11). Thus one who sees his friend doing something improper and out of concern for [his fellow’s] honor and the like remains silent, or at times is concerned about losing his own benefit and flatters him, such things are truly cause for anguish. And it is known what our Rabbis of blessed memory said (Proverbs 12:10), “the mercies of the wicked are cruelty”. And they said (Eruvin 21b, Eruvin 22a) on the verse (Song of Songs 5:11) “black as a raven” — you do not find words of Torah except in one who blackens his face over them like a raven and in one that makes himself cruel to his children and to the members of his household like a raven. And it is written (Proverbs 23:13-14) “do not withhold correction from the child… thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from She’ol”. And as the masters of mussar have already written, that women who show tenderness towards their children and prevent their fathers from hitting them, of them the verse says (Lamentations 4:10): “hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children”, for they caused that in the end [the child] will inherit Gehinnom. And on this, the wise [with] eyes in his head and a mighty heart should watch strictly and uphold the words of Torah and the words of the Sages properly, as required. And one who does this is amongst the students of Abraham our father, for although he was a merciful father, the perfection of the attribute of kindness, he made himself cruel to his only son that he bore in his old age, and took a knife to slaughter his son (Genesis 22:10) to do the will of his creator. And compared to slaughtering a child or giving up a life, everything else will weigh triflingly, and he will not refrain for any reason. This one should take to heart to stop himself from doing all evil and uphold every good thing, and this the whole of man.

The Land of Israel - The Land of Israel is the beauty of Israel (Ketubot 113a). It is known how great her virtue is, as is illustrated in the Holy Zohar (Section 3 Page 72) and other holy books — that whomever Hashem will choose He will bring near to Him to behold the pleasantness of Hashem and to contemplate in His temple. And every man must have his eyes and heart [directed] there every day, along the lines of which is written (Psalms 42:3) “my soul thirsts for G-d, the living G-d; O when will I come to appear before G-d!”. And thus one must try with all his strength to affix his residence in the Land of Israel, only he should first open his eyes [and carefully consider the matter] so that he not come to regret his earlier [decision], and so that he not have to turn back and leave. And a safeguard for this is that one should not go except in old age, after his wife has ceased to have “the way of women” and no longer bears Children, and he should not bring the young children with him, whether sons or daughters. And if G-d has enlarged his borders [i.e. given him the means], he may bring a daughter, because she is married off and he is thereby relieved of [supporting] her, but a son he should not bring at all, because the young family multiplies, and he does not know what a day may bring forth. And it is true that the air of the Land of Israel makes one wise, but according to what our own eyes see, a person’s livelihood is difficult in the Land of Israel, and for the most part they are compelled to leave, to the point that they eagerly seize the opportunity for a mission undertaken for a mitzvah, to go out to foreign cities for about ten years or more. And they will live lives of hardship — they themselves, and their wives even more, and great are the dangers suffered by travelers both to the body and soul, as is well known. It is not so with those who live outside the land of Israel — they find enough for their livelihood in their own place, and when an elderly man and woman go [to the Land of Israel] as is proper, they will be able to live there to a good old age, and even if they live a life of hardship, it will be considered a good life in view of the abundance of [spiritual] good.

Entry 22
One must be very careful with the blessing of God, not to recite a blessing in vain or an unnecessary blessing. For [if he does so], he transgresses, "You shall not take [the Lord, your God's name in vain" (Exodus 20:7). And you find this with an ignoramus who wants to be pious and recites a blessing over every single thing; and they sometimes stumble and fall with the prohibition of a blessing in vain or an unnecessary blessing. 'So the one who walks with the Sages will become wise.' And likewise concerning blessing (greeting) one's friend, it is written (Proverbs 27:14), "He who greets his fellow loudly early in the morning shall have it reckoned to him as a curse." And there are two ways this [happens]. The first is that there is a prohibition to say hello to one's fellow or to greet him before prayer [in the morning] since it is considered as if he is making him into an altar. And the second way is if he greets his friend in front of others and causes evil to [his friend], as the others will jump on him, since they will think that it would be fitting and good that he benefits them much more than he benefits this one. But [his fellow] does not imagine it so, and his heart does not think so for various reasons known to him. So it comes out that he caused for there to be arguments and grudges against him. Hence, 'every clever man should act knowledgeably.' So in any place where there is a concern that some damage will be caused to his fellow in any aspect or way - if he knows the thing, 'a trustworthy soul keeps a confidence.'

Entry 27
And it is hence an obligation incumbent upon a man to have mercy on his soul and on the soul of his daughter, to make efforts with all of his power to seek quietude for her which will be good for her and for him in this world and in the world to come. So, from time to time, he should pour out his soul in front of God for his sons and daughters, that God should arrange a proper match for them. (And I have already written a prayer for this, and have attached it to my house of prayer.) And also if the daughter herself knows to write or to read from what is written — her father should go to a rabbi, that he arrange a prayer [for her]. (And, with God's help, I will lift my hand for this [task] as well.) Or she herself should privately cry out from her soul in front of God, with words that come from her heart according to everything that comes out of her mouth, and pray to God that he should arrange a proper match for her. [She should pray that he be] a Torah scholar and that she be given into the lap of one who fears God, and that her match work out well. And prayer is a big [thing] in this matter. Go out and learn from Leah, who was Esau's portion. Yet by way of crying greatly, to the point that Leah's eyes became soft, she landed in Jacob's lot (Bava Batra 123a) and merited to bring out six tribes from which the splendor of Israel came out, houses of priesthood, of the Leviteship, and houses of monarchy.

YOUNG MAN- It is written- (Ecclesiastes 12:1) "Remember your creator in the days of your youth" For then is the ideal to serve your creator, for it is when a man has [ideal] might and strength to [give for] the Torah, to labor with all his strength on the deliberation [of the Torah] and to make ones nights like days, [maintaining only] minimal sleep. Then (i.e. his youth) he will be free, with no burdens. His consciousness will be clear and settled, able to understand, discern, listen, learn, and teach. Since he has no preoccupations, especially if he is relying on his "father's table"- [meaning] a complete lack of preoccupations, whatever he learns will be "indented" in his brain. As the saying of the sages (Ethics of the Fathers 4: 20) "One who learns in his childhood to what is he comparable? To ink written on fresh parchment, clear and sustaining". This is the Torah that remains (lit. stands) with Torah Scholars in their old age when their consciousness is settled. For Torah [learned] in youth is the "yeast in the dough", the foundation stone.
