Said R. Simeon: ‘Alas for the man who regards the Torah as a book of mere tales and everyday matters! If that were so, we, even we could compose a torah dealing with everyday affairs, and of even greater excellence. Nay, even the princes of the world possess books of greater worth which we could use as a model for composing some such torah. The Torah, however, contains in all its words supernal truths and sublime mysteries.

The stories of the Torah are thus only her outer garments, and whoever looks upon that garment as being the Torah itself, woe to that man-such a one will have no portion in the next world. David thus said: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” (Ps. 119, 18), to wit, the things that are beneath the garment.

Rabbi Hizkiah opened his discourse with the text: As a lily among thorns, etc. (S.S. 2, 2). ‘What’, he said, ‘does the lily symbolise? It symbolises the Community of Israel. As the lily among thorns is tinged with red and white, so the Community of Israel is visited now with justice and now with mercy; as the lily possesses thirteen leaves, so the Community of Israel is vouchsafed thirteen categories of mercy which surround it on every side. For this reason, the term Elohim (God) mentioned here (in the first verse of Genesis) is separated by thirteen words from the next mention of Elohim, symbolising the thirteen categories of mercy which surround the Community of Israel to protect it.

the point and the temple were firmly established together, then Bereshith combined the supernal Beginning with Wisdom. Afterwards the character of that temple was changed, and it was called “house” (bayith). The combination of this with the supernal point which is called rosh gives Bereshith, which is the name used so long as the house was uninhabited. When, however, it was sown with seed to make it habitable, it was called Elohim, hidden and mysterious. The Zohar was hidden and withdrawn so long as the building was within and yet to bring forth, and the house was extended only so far as to find room for the holy seed. Before it had conceived and had extended sufficiently to be habitable, it was not called Elohim, but all was still included in the term Bereshith. After it had acquired the name of Elohim, it brought forth offspring from the seed that had been implanted in it. What is this seed? It consists of the graven letters, the secret source of the Torah, which issued from the first point.

THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF NOAH. R. Hiya opened with the text: And thy people are all righteous, they will inherit the land for ever; the branch of my planting, the work of my hands wherein I glory (Is. 60, 21). He said: ‘Happy are the people of Israel, who occupy themselves with the Torah and are familiar with its paths, through following which they will merit the world to come.

R. Abba introduced this portion with a discourse on the text: Hearken to me, ye obstinate of heart who are far from righteousness (Is. 46, 12). He said: ‘How obstinate is the heart of sinners who see the paths and ways of the Torah and pay no heed to them, but harden their hearts and do not return in repentance to their Master, wherefore they are called “obstinate of heart”. Also “far from righteousness”, because they keep themselves far from the Torah.

AND THE LORD APPEARED UNTO HIM. R. Hiya commenced to discourse on the verse: The flowers appear on the earth, the time of song is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land (S. S. 2, 12). He said: ‘When God created the world, He endowed the earth with all the energy requisite for it, but it did not put forth produce until man appeared. When, however, man was created, all the products that were latent in the earth appeared above ground.

AND THE LIFE OF SARAH WAS A HUNDRED AND SEVEN AND TWENTY YEARS. R. Jose discoursed on the verse: And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging (Jonah 1, 15). ‘The question may here be asked,’ he said, ‘why it was the sea and not the earth that raged against him, seeing that he fled to prevent the Shekinah from resting upon him.

R. Hiya once discoursed on the text: Who can express the mighty acts of the Lord, or make all his praise to be heard? (Ps. 106, 2). ‘When God’, he said, ‘resolved to create the world, He used the Torah as the plan both of the whole and the parts. Hence Scripture says: “Then I was by him as a nursling, and I was daily all delight” (Prov. 8, 30), where the word ‘amon (nursling) may also be read ‘oman (architect, designer).

AND JACOB WENT OUT PROM BEER-SHEBA AND WENT TOWARD HARAN. R. Hiya drew a parallel between this statement and the verse: The sun ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he ariseth (Eccles. 1, 5). ‘The sun arising’, he said, ‘is parallel to Jacob when in Beersheba; and “the sun going down” to Jacob on his way to Haran, when, as we read, “he tarried there all night, because the sun was set”; and as the “sun hasteth to his place where he ariseth”, so Jacob “lay down in that place to sleep”.

AND IT CAME TO PASS AT THE END. R. Hiya expounded the word “end” from the text: He setteth an end for darkness, and he searcheth out to the furthest bound; a stone of thick darkness and the shadow of death (Job 28, 3). ‘The end here mentioned is’, he said, ‘an allusion to the “end of the left”, which, after roaming to and fro in the world, finally ascends and presents itself before the Holy One, blessed be He, to bring accusations against mankind. He “searcheth out to the furthest bound” (takhlith— destruction), inasmuch as all his works are never for good, but always for destruction and for the utter annihilation of the world.

NOW THESE ARE THE NAMES OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WHICH CAME INTO EGYPT EVERY MAN AND HIS HOUSEHOLD CAME WITH JACOB. It is written: And the wise shall be resplendent as the splendour (zohar) of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness shall be like the stars for ever and ever (Dan. 12, 3). “The wise” are those who penetrate to the real essence of wisdom; “they shall be resplendent”, i.e. illumined with the radiance of the supernal Wisdom; “as the splendour”, this is the flashing of the Stream that goes forth from Eden (Gen. 11, 10), this being alluded to as “the firmament”. AND IT CAME TO PASS WHEN PHARAOH SENT AWAY THE PEOPLE, ETC R. Simeon discoursed here on the verse: “A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon shigionoth” (Hab. 3, 1). ‘Why’, he said, ‘is this vision of Habakkuk designated “prayer”, a title unique in the prophetic writings? Why do we find only a prayer of Habakkuk and not of Isaiah or Jeremiah?

NOW JETHRO,THE PRIEST OF MIDIAN, MOSES’ FATHER-IN-LAW, HEARD OF ALL THAT GOD HAD DONE FOR MOSES AND FOR ISRAEL. R. Hezekiah opened here with a discourse on the verse: And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people and blessed them (Lev. 9, 22). ‘The use of the word “hand” here’, he said, ‘in the singular indicates that he meant to lift up his right hand above his left; and this for a certain esoteric reason.

AND THESE ARE THE JUDGEMENTS WHICH THOU SHALT SET BEFORE THEM. R. Simeon here introduced the subject of transmigration of souls, saying: ‘Onkelos translates the above words as follows: “These are the judgements which thou shalt order before them”. In other words, “These are the orders of the metempsychosis; the judgements of the souls, by which each of them receives its appropriate punishment.” Associates, the time is now arrived to reveal diverse hidden and secret mysteries in regard to the transmigration of souls.

AND THE LORD SPAKE UNTO MOSES SAYING, SPEAK UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL THAT THEY TAKE ME A HEAVE OFFERING. R. Hiya, on coming to this portion, quoted the verse, “For Jacob hath chosen Kah unto himself, Israel is his costly possession” (Ps. 135, 4). Said he: ‘How beloved must Israel be to the Holy One, blessed be He, seeing that He has chosen them and desired to unite Himself with them and be bound up with them, making them a nation unique throughout all the world, as it is written: “Who is like unto thy people Israel, a unique people on earth?” (2 Sam. 7, 23). And they, too, have chosen Him and bound themselves up with Him, as it is written, “Jacob hath chosen Kah unto himself’. Yea, for over the other nations He appointed celestial principalities and powers, but reserved Israel for His own special portion.’

Now, what is this “Book of the Hidden Mystery”?’ Said R. Simeon: ‘It contains five sections which are to be found in the midst of a great Hall, and whose wisdom fills the whole earth.’ Said R. Judah: ‘If this book of wisdom is enclosed in that Hall, it is of more worth than any other tome.’ ‘Verily,’ returned R. Simeon, ‘it is so, for one who is used to passing in and out of the courts of wisdom, but not to one who rarely or never enters into that Hall.

In all cases it contains a reference to the supernal world, indicating that the Shekinah is joined with Moses.’

AND MOSES ASSEMBLED ALL THE CONGREGATION OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, ETC. R. Hiya opened here a discourse on the text: “And Saul said unto the Kenites: Go depart”, etc. (I Sam. 15, 6). ‘Observe’, he said, ‘that in regard to Amalek it is written: “I remember that which Amalek did to Israel”, etc. (Ibid. 15, 2). What is the reason that none of the wars waged by other nations against Israel was so displeasing to the Almighty as was the war waged against them by Amalek? The reason, assuredly, is that the battle with Amalek was waged on both fronts, both on high and below; for at that time the evil serpent gathered all its forces both above and below.

Hiya, in this connection, quoted the verse: “All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full” (Eccles. 1, 7). ‘Esoterically speaking’, he said, ‘all the rivers here allude to the sacred brooks and springs which, when filled, pour forth to supply the great ocean. This in turn, when so filled, flows over and affords drink to all the “beasts of the field”.

R. Eleazar began here with the verse, “Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God, ask it either in the depth or in the height above” (Isa. 7, 11). He said: ‘We have compared the former with the latter generations, and found that the former were conversant with a higher wisdom by which they knew how to combine the letters that were given to Moses on Mount Sinai, and even the sinners of Israel knew a deep wisdom contained in the letters and the difference between higher and lower letters, and how to do things with them in this world.

The evil tongue is called a “sharp sword” (Ps. 57, 5), and therefore it says, “Be ye afraid of the sword”, to wit, of the evil tongue. Why? “For wrathful are the punishments of the sword”, to wit, the sword of the Lord, “that ye may know there is a judgement”, for he that hath a sword in his tongue is punished with the sword; hence it says, “this is the law of the leper”.’

R. Isaac opened his discourse with the text: “Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.” We also read: “Serve the Lord with gladness, come before him with singing.” These verses seem to contradict one another. But the truth is that “Serve the Lord with fear” means that all service which a man renders to his Master should begin with fear and awe of Him, and through this fear he will come to perform the precepts of the Torah with joy.

AND THE LORD SAID UNTO MOSES, SPEAK UNTO THE PRIESTS THE SONS OF AARON AND SAY UNTO THEM, THERE SHALL NONE DEFILE HIMSELF FOR THE DEAD AMONG HIS PEOPLE. R. Jose said: ‘What is the connection of this with the verse that immediately precedes, “A man also or a woman that hath a familiar spirit or that is a wizard shall be put to death” (Lev. 20, 27)? It is this: that having admonished the Israelites to sanctify themselves, the Scripture now admonishes the priests to sanctify themselves specially. Later, too, it admonishes the Levites (Num. 18, 21 et seq.), so that all should become holy and pure.

Jose said: ‘This passage commences simply, “This is the statute of the law”, but in another passage we find, “Now this (ve-ZOth) is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel” (Deut. 4, 44). As we have learnt, because the addition of the vau (now) indicates the complete union of all, of the Community of Israel with the Holy One, blessed be He; and such is the essence of the Torah.

The sword of the Holy One Blessed Be He: yud is the head of the sword, vav is the body of the sword, hey and hey are its two faces. "Tzedek tzedek tirdof" - they cut two judgements: a judgement before the court above and a judgement before the court below. And from this we recognize: a human cannot even move a finger until given permission from on high.

Ra'aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd)... "and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver" (Deuteronomy 22:19). We are commanded to punish whoever defames someone's character. This is the meaning of, "and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the girl, because he has brought out an evil name upon a virgin of Yisrael." Sages, this applies to after the wedding, since he says, "I found not your daughter a virgin" (Ibid. 17). Not all evil names are alike, since the spies who spread an evil name on the land were punished for it by dying and not meriting it. A woman is like ground, it is like the explanation that Esther was the ground.

GIVE EAR, YE HEAVENS, AND I WILL SPEAK, ETC. R. Judah cited here the verse: “I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had withdrawn himself and was gone”, etc. (S.S. 5, 6). ‘And just before this it is written, “I was asleep but my heart waked” (Ibid. 2). Said the Community of Israel: I was asleep to the precepts of the Law when I went in the wilderness, but my heart was awake to enter the land so as to perform them, since they all are meant for the land. “It is the voice of my beloved that knocketh”: this is Moses, who administered many reproofs answer Amen departs from this world, his soul ascends and they proclaim before him: Open the gates before him as he opened gates every day by being careful to answer Amen. But if one hears a blessing from the reader and is not careful to answer Amen, what is his punishment? As he did not open blessings below, so they do not open for him above, and when he leaves this world they proclaim before him: Close the gates in the face of So-and-so that he enter not, and do not receive him woe to him and to his soul!
