Deuteronomy 6:4-9 · JPS 1917

HEAR, O ISRAEL: THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE.

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;

and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Blessing the children

Siddur Ashkenaz, Shabbat, Shabbat Evening, Blessing the Children · Translation based on the Metsudah linear siddur

It has become a widely accepted custom for parents to bless their children on the eve of Shabbos. The placing of both hands upon the child's head when giving the blessing, symbolizes that the blessing is bestowed with fullness of spirit and heart.

For a boy: May God make you like Ephraim and Menashe. May Adonoy bless you and guard you. May Adonoy shine His countenance upon you and be gracious unto you. May Adonoy turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace.

For a girl: May God make you like Sorah, Rivkah, Rochel and Leah. May Adonoy bless you and guard you. May Adonoy shine His countenance upon you and be gracious unto you. May Adonoy turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace.

Psalms 127 · JPS 1917

A Song of Ascents; of Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, They labour in vain that build it; Except the LORD keep the city, The watchman waketh but in vain.

It is vain for you that ye rise early, and sit up late, Ye that eat the bread of toil; So He giveth unto His beloved in sleep.

Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD; The fruit of the womb is a reward.

As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, So are the children of one's youth.

Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them; They shall not be put to shame, When they speak with their enemies in the gate.

Isaiah 54:13 · JPS 1917

And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Psalms 78:1-7 · JPS 1917

Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter dark sayings concerning days of old;

That which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us,

We will not hide from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength, and His wondrous works that He hath done. .

For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children;

That the generation to come might know them, even the children that should be born; Who should arise and tell them to their children,

That they might put their confidence in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments;

They mixed him a second cup, and here the son questions his father. If the son lacks the intelligence to ask, his father instructs him: How different this night is from all other nights! On all other nights we eat hametz and matzah, tonight only matzah. On all other nights we eat other vegetables, tonight only bitter herbs. On all other nights, we eat meat roasted, boiled or cooked, tonight only roasted. On all other nights we dip once, tonight twice. And according to the intellect of the son, the father instructs him. He begins with shame and concludes with praise; and expounds from “A wandering Aramean was my father” (Deuteronomy 6:20-25) until he completes the whole section.

A Baraita states: "A father is obligated to circumcise, redeem, teach Torah to, find a wife for, and teach a trade to his son". There are those that say "[there is] even [an obligation to show his son] how to swim". Rabbi Yehuda Says "all that does not teach his son craft [or trade] teaches him to steal" To steal, do you think? [will really be a result of not teaching your son to trade]? Rather, or as if he taught him how to steal.
