May it be Your will, Eternal One, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, support our footsteps towards peace, guide us toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination, for life, joy, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe, ambush, bandits and wild animals along the way, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to Earth. May You send blessing in our every handiwork, and grant us peace, kindness, and mercy in your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. May You hear the sound of our supplication, because You are the God who hears prayer and supplications. Blessed are You, Eternal One, who hears prayer.

Jacob’s dream

Genesis 28:10-22 · JPS 1917

And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.

And he lighted upon the place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

And, behold, the LORD stood beside him, and said: ‘I am the LORD, the God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed.

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.’

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said: ‘Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.’

And he was afraid, and said: ‘How full of awe is this place! this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’

And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

And he called the name of that place Beth-el, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: ‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then shall the LORD be my God,

and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that Thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto Thee.’

Berakhot 29b:16-17

Berakhot 29b:16-17 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

Elijah said to Rab Judah, the brother of Rab Sala Hasida : "Be not wrathful and thou wilt not sin. Be not intoxicated and thou wilt not sin. When thou settest out on a journey, take counsel with thy Creator and go forth." What means, "Take counsel with thy Creator and go forth" ? R. Jacob said in the name of Rab Hisda : This refers to the prayer to be offered on undertaking a journey. R. Jacob also said in the name of Rab Hisda : Whoever sets out on a journey should offer the prayer ordained for a journey.

What is this prayer? "May it be Thy will, O Lord my God, to conduct me in peace, to direct my steps in peace, to uphold me in peace, and to deliver me from every enemy and ambush by the way. Send a blessing upon the work of my hands, and let me obtain grace, lovingkindness and mercy in Thine eyes and in the eyes of all who behold me. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, Who hearkenest unto prayer."

Berakhot 64a:9

Berakhot 64a:9 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

R. Abin the Levite also said : One who takes leave of his friend should not say to him, "Go in peace" but "Go to peace"; because in the case of Jethro who said to Moses "Go to peace" (Exod. iv. 18), the latter advanced and prospered ; but in the case of David who said to Absalom "Go in peace" (II Sam. xv. 9), the latter went and was hanged.

They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters—

These saw the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep;

For He commanded, and raised the stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves thereof;

They mounted up to the heaven, they went down to the deeps; Their soul melted away because of trouble;

They reeled to and fro, and staggered like a drunken man, And all their wisdom was swallowed up—

They cried unto the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses.

He made the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof were still.

Then were they glad because they were quiet, And He led them unto their desired haven.

As the Rabbis departed from the school of R. Ammi (another version: R. Hannina's school), they said to him: Mayest thou see thy world in thy life-time, and may thine end be in the life of the world to come and thy hope throughout the generations. May thy heart meditate in understanding, thy mouth speak wisdom, thy tongue abound in joyful songs, thine eyelids set thy glance straight before thee, thine eyes be illumined with the light of the Torah, thy countenance shine like the splendour of the firmament, thy lips utter knowledge, thy reins exult with up-rightness, and thy feet run to hear the words of the Ancient of days.

Rab Judah said in the name of Rab : Four classes of people must offer thanksgiving : They who go down to the sea, who journey in the desert, the invalid who recovers and the prisoner who has been set free.
