Psalm 13

Psalms 13 · JPS 1917

For the Leader. A Psalm of David.

How long, O LORD, wilt Thou forget me for ever? How long wilt Thou hide Thy face from me?

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart by day? How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

Behold Thou, and answer me, O LORD my God; Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Lest mine enemy say: 'I have prevailed against him'; Lest mine adversaries rejoice when I am moved.

But as for me, in Thy mercy do I trust; My heart shall rejoice in Thy salvation. I will sing unto the LORD, Because He hath dealt bountifully with me.

Psalms 27:13-14

Psalms 27:13-14 · JPS 1917

If I had not believed to look upon the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living!—

Wait on the LORD; Be strong, and let thy heart take courage; Yea, wait thou for the LORD.

Psalms 73 · JPS 1917

A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, even to such as are pure in heart.

But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For there are no pangs at their death, and their body is sound.

In the trouble of man they are not; neither are they plagued like men.

Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment.

Their eyes stand forth from fatness; they are gone beyond the imaginations of their heart.

They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression; they speak as if there were none on high.

They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth.

Therefore His people return hither; And waters of fullness are drained out by them.

And they say: 'How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?'

Behold, such are the wicked; And they that are always at ease increase riches.

Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency;

For all the day have I been plagued, And my chastisement came every morning.

If I had said: 'I will speak thus', Behold, I had been faithless to the generation of Thy children.

And when I pondered how I might know this, It was wearisome in mine eyes;

Until I entered into the sanctuary of God, And considered their end.

Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin.

How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

For my heart was in a ferment, And I was pricked in my reins. .

But I was brutish, and ignorant; I was as a beast before Thee.

Nevertheless I am continually with Thee; Thou holdest my right hand.

Thou wilt guide me with Thy counsel, And afterward receive me with glory.

Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And beside Thee I desire none upon earth.

My flesh and my heart faileth; But God is the rock of my heart and my portion for ever.

For, lo, they that go far from Thee shall perish; Thou dost destroy all them that go astray from Thee.

But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Thy works.

Berakhot 10a:31-32 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

For thus has it been handed down to me from my forefather: Even if a sharp sword be laid upon a man's neck, let him not despair of [the divine] mercy."

It has been similarly reported : R. Johanan and R. Eleazar both said : Even if a sharp sword be laid upon a man's neck, let him not despair of [the divine] mercy, as it is said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him" (Job xiii. 15).

Moses in Rabbi Akiva’s academy

Menachot 29b:3-5 · Sefaria Community Translation

Rabbi Yehudah said, "Rav said, "When Moshe ascended to the heavens, he found the Holy One, Blessed be He, sitting and attaching crowns to the letters. He said before Him, "Master of the Universe! Who is staying your hand?" He said to him, "There is one man man who will exist after many generations, and Akiva the son of Yosef is his name, who will in the future expound on every crown and crown piles and piles of laws."

He said before Him, "Master of the Universe! Show him to me." He said to him, "Turn backwards." He went and sat at the end of eight rows [of students in Rabbi Akiva's Beit Midrash], and he did not know what they were talking [about]. He got upset. When he [Rabbi Akiva] got to [teaching] something, his students said to him, "Teacher, from where do you learn this?" He said to them, "It is a law [that was taught] to Moshe at Sinai." He calmed down.

He returned and came before the Holy One, Blessed be He, and said before Him, "Master of the Universe! You have a man like this, and You are giving the Torah through me?" He said to Him, "Be silent. This is what I have decided." He said before Him, "Master of the Universe! You have shown me his Torah; show me his reward." He said to him, "Turn backwards." He turned backwards, and saw that they were flaying his flesh with [iron] combs. He said before Him, "Master of the Universe! Such Torah, and such reward!" He said to him, "Be silent. This is what I have decided."

God answers Job

Job 38:1-11 · JPS 1917

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

Who is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge?

Gird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding.

Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it?

Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Or who shut up the sea with doors, When it broke forth, and issued out of the womb;

When I made the cloud the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,

And prescribed for it My decree, And set bars and doors,

And said: ‘Thus far shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed’?

And He said: ‘I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.’

And He said: ‘Thou canst not see My face, for man shall not see Me and live.’

And the LORD said: ‘Behold, there is a place by Me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock.

And it shall come to pass, while My glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with My hand until I have passed by.

And I will take away My hand, and thou shalt see My back; but My face shall not be seen.’

O God, Thou art my God, earnestly will I seek Thee; My soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee, In a dry and weary land, where no water is.

So have I looked for Thee in the sanctuary, To see Thy power and Thy glory. .

For Thy lovingkindness is better than life; My lips shall praise Thee.

So will I bless Thee as long as I live; In Thy name will I lift up my hands.

My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness; And my mouth doth praise Thee with joyful lips;

When I remember Thee upon my couch, And meditate on Thee in the night-watches.

For Thou hast been my help, And in the shadow of Thy wings do I rejoice.

My soul cleaveth unto Thee; Thy right hand holdeth me fast.

Berakhot 32b:15-18

Berakhot 32b:15-18 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

"But Zion said. The Lord hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me" (Is. xlix. 14). But a woman forsaken is the same as a woman forgotten ! R. Simeon b. Lakish said : The community of Israel spake before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Lord of the universe ! Should a man marry a woman after his first wife, he remembers the deeds of the first ; but Thou hast forsaken me and forgotten me!"

The Holy One, blessed be He, replied, "My daughter, twelve constellations have I created in the firmament, and for each constellation I have created thirty hosts, and for each host I have created thirty legions, and for each legion I have created thirty files, and for each file I have created thirty cohorts, and for each cohort I have created thirty camps, and in each camp I have suspended three hundred and sixty-five thousand myriads of stars, in accordance with the days of the solar year, and all of them have I only created for thy sake ; and yet thou sayest, 'Thou hast forsaken me, Thou hast forgotten me'!"

"Can a woman forget her sucking child ['ulah]?" (Is. xlix. 15). The Holy One, blessed be He, said, "Can I forget the burnt-offerings ['olot] of rams and the firstborn of animals which Thou didst offer to Me in the wilderness?" [The community of Israel] spake before Him, "Lord of the universe ! Since there is no forgetfulness before the throne of Thy glory, perhaps Thou wilt not forget against me the incident of the Golden Calf!" He replied, "Yea, 'these' will be forgotten" (ibid.).

Israel spake before Him, "Lord of the universe! Since there is forgetfulness before the throne of Thy glory, perhaps Thou wilt forget for me the incident at Sinai!" He replied, "Yet 'the I' will I not forget thee" (ibid.).

My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me, and art far from my help at the words of my cry?

O my God, I call by day, but Thou answerest not; and at night, and there is no surcease for me.

Yet Thou art holy, O Thou that art enthroned upon the praises of Israel.

In Thee did our fathers trust; they trusted, and Thou didst deliver them.

Unto Thee they cried, and escaped; in Thee did they trust, and were not ashamed.

But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head:

'Let him commit himself unto the LORD! let Him rescue him; let Him deliver him, seeing He delighteth in him.'

For Thou art He that took me out of the womb; Thou madest me trust when I was upon my mother's breasts.

Upon Thee I have been cast from my birth; Thou art my God from my mother's womb.

Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
