Psalms 90 · JPS 1917

A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.

Thou turnest man to contrition; And sayest: 'Return, ye children of men.'

For a thousand years in Thy sight Are but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch in the night.

Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

For we are consumed in Thine anger, And by Thy wrath are we hurried away.

Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, Our secret sins in the light of Thy countenance.

For all our days are passed away in Thy wrath; We bring our years to an end as a tale that is told.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten, Or even by reason of strength fourscore years; Yet is their pride but travail and vanity; For it is speedily gone, and we fly away.

Who knoweth the power of Thine anger, And Thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto Thee?

So teach us to number our days, That we may get us a heart of wisdom.

Return, O LORD; how long? And let it repent Thee concerning Thy servants.

O satisfy us in the morning with Thy mercy; That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Make us glad according to the days wherein Thou hast afflicted us, According to the years wherein we have seen evil.

Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, And Thy glory upon their children.

And let the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; Establish Thou also upon us the work of our hands; Yea, the work of our hands establish Thou it.

Psalms 39:5-8 · JPS 1917

'LORD, make me to know mine end, And the measure of my days, what it is; Let me know how short-lived I am.

Behold, Thou hast made my days as hand-breadths; and mine age is as nothing before Thee; surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah

Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; He heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope, it is in Thee.

Remember then thy Creator in the days of thy youth, and the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say: 'I have no pleasure in them';

Before the sun, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, are darkened, and the clouds return after the rain;

And the doors shall be shut in the street, when the sound of the grinding is low; and one shall start up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;

Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and terrors shall be in the way; and the almond-tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall drag itself along, and the caperberry shall fail; Because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets;

Before the silver cord is snapped asunder, and the golden bowl is shattered, And the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel falleth shattered, into the pit;

And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, and the spirit returneth unto God who gave it.

Pirkei Avot 4:16-17 · Mishnah Yomit, Dr. Joshua Kulp

Rabbi Jacob said: this world is like a vestibule before the world to come; prepare yourself in the vestibule, so that you may enter the banqueting-hall.

He used to say: more precious is one hour in repentance and good deeds in this world, than all the life of the world to come; And more precious is one hour of the tranquility of the world to come, than all the life of this world.

Rabbi Akiva’s last Shema

Berakhot 61b:9 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

When they brought R. 'Akiba out to execution, it was the time for reading the Shema' ; and though they were combing his flesh with iron combs, he kept receiving upon himself the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven. His disciples said to him, "Our master, thus far!" He answered them, "Throughout my life I have been troubled about this verse, '[And thou shalt love the Lord thy God...] and with all thy soul' which means : Even if He take thy life. For said I, 'When will it be in my power to fulfil it?' But now that the opportunity is mine, shall I not fulfil if?" He prolonged the word ehad until his soul left [the body] with the word ehad [on his lips]. A Bat Kol issued forth and announced, "Happy art thou, R. 'Akiba, that thy soul went out with the word ehad!"

The death of Moses

Deuteronomy 34:1-8 · JPS 1917

And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, even Gilead as far as Dan;

and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the hinder sea;

and the South, and the Plain, even the valley of Jericho the city of palm-trees, as far as Zoar.

And the LORD said unto him: ‘This is the land which I swore unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying: I will give it unto thy seed; I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.’

So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

And he was buried in the valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor; and no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; so the days of weeping in the mourning for Moses were ended.

“As he emerged from his mother's womb, so he will return naked, to go as he came, and he will take nothing for his toil that he can carry in his hand” (Ecclesiastes 5:14). “As he emerged from his mother's womb” – Geniva said: [It is analogous] to a fox that found a vineyard that was fenced on all sides. There was one opening, and it sought to enter through it but was unable to do so. What did it do? It fasted three days until it was thin and weak, and it entered through the opening, ate, and grew fat. It sought to exit, but it could not pass at all. It again fasted, three other days, until it was thin and weak and it returned to be as it had been, and it exited. When it exited, it turned its face and looked at [the vineyard]. It said: ‘Vineyard, vineyard, what good are you, and what good are the fruits that are in you? Everything that is in you is good and excellent; however, what benefit is there from you? Just as one enters into you, so he emerges.’ This world is the same. Another matter: “As he emerged from his mother's womb, so he will return naked, to go as he came” – it is taught: As a person comes, so he will go. A person comes with noise, and takes his leave of the world with noise; he comes to the world with weeping, and takes his leave of this world with weeping; he comes to the world with affection, and takes his leave of the world with affection; he comes to the world with a sigh, and takes his leave of the world with a sigh; he comes to the world without knowledge, and takes his leave of the world without knowledge. It is taught in the name of Rabbi Meir: When a person comes to the world, his fists are clenched, as though to say: The entire world is mine, I will inherit it. When he takes his leave of the world his hands are open, as though to say: I did not inherit anything in this world, as Solomon said: “As he emerged from his mother's womb, so he will return naked, to go as he came, and [he will take] nothing [for his toil that he can carry in his hand].”

The order of Vidui, the deathbed confession, that is done by a companion: “I acknowledge you, Adonai, my God and God of my ancestors, that my healing and my death are in Your hands. May it be your will before You that I be healed to a complete healing, and if I die, may I be absolved for all of my sins and sufferings and crimes, as I sinned and suffered and did crimes before You, and may my portion be in the Garden of Eden, and may I merit the world to come which is hidden away for the righteous.” And if he wants to lengthen like the confession of Yom Kippur, the permission is in his hand.

But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, And His righteousness unto children's children;

To such as keep His covenant, And to those that remember His precepts to do them.

Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai’s last hours

Berakhot 28b:8-11 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

When Rabban Johanan b. Zakkai was ill, his disciples went in to visit him. On beholding them, he began to weep. His disciples said to him, "O lamp of Israel, right-hand pillar, mighty hammer! Wherefore dost thou weep ?"

He replied to them, "If I was being led into the presence of a human king who to-day is here and tomorrow in the grave, who if he were wrathful against me his anger would not be eternal, who if he imprisoned me the imprisonment would not be everlasting, who if he condemned me to death the death would not be for ever, and whom I can appease with words and bribe with money — even then I would weep ; but now, when I am being led into the presence of the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, Who lives and endures for all eternity, Who if He be wrathful against me His anger is eternal. Who if He imprisoned me the imprisonment would be everlasting. Who if He condemned me to death the death would be for ever, and Whom I cannot appease with words nor bribe with money — nay more, when before me lie two ways, one of the Garden of Eden and the other of Gehinnom, and I know not in which I am to be led — shall I not weep ?"

They said to him, "Our master, bless us !" He said to them, "May it be His will that the fear of Heaven be upon you [as great] as the fear of flesh and blood," His disciples exclaimed, "Only as great !" He replied, "Would that it be [as great] ; for know ye, when a man intends to commit a transgression, he says, 'I hope nobody will see me'."

At the time of his departure [from the world] he said to them, "Remove all the utensils because of the defilement and prepare a seat for Hezekiah, king of Judah, who is coming."

And when Jacob made an end of charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and expired, and was gathered unto his people.

Rabbi Yose ben Kisma said: Once I was walking by the way when a man met me, and greeted me and I greeted him. He said to me, “Rabbi, where are you from?” I said to him, “I am from a great city of sages and scribes”. He said to me, “Rabbi, would you consider living with us in our place? I would give you a thousand thousand denarii of gold, and precious stones and pearls.” I said to him: “My son, even if you were to give me all the silver and gold, precious stones and pearls that are in the world, I would not dwell anywhere except in a place of Torah; for when a man passes away there accompany him neither gold nor silver, nor precious stones nor pearls, but Torah and good deeds alone, as it is said, “When you walk it will lead you. When you lie down it will watch over you; and when you are awake it will talk with you” (Proverbs 6:22). “When you walk it will lead you” in this world. “When you lie down it will watch over you” in the grave; “And when you are awake it will talk with you” in the world to come. And thus it is written in the book of Psalms by David, king of Israel, “I prefer the teaching You proclaimed to thousands of pieces of gold and silver” (Psalms 119:72), And it says: “Mine is the silver, and mine the gold, says the Lord of Hosts” (Haggai 2:8).
