Rabbi Nechunia ben Hakana said, "One verse states, 'And now men see not the light which is bright in the skies,' (Job 37:21). Another verse states, 'He made darkness His hiding-place' (Psalms 18:12). And it says, 'Clouds and darkness surround Him' (Psalms 97:2). This is a difficulty. A third scripture reconciles them: 'Even the darkness is not too dark for You, But the night shines as the day; the darkness is as the light' (Psalms 139:12)."

Rabbi Berechiah said, "It is written, 'Now the earth was tohu and bohu' (Genesis 1:2). What does 'was' mean? That the tohu already was. What is tohu? Something that confounds [m'taha] people. And what is bohu? Tohu was, and it returned to bohu. And what is bohu? A thing that has substance in it, as is written, 'It is inside it [bo hu].'"

[Rabbi Berechiah continued,] "And why does the Torah begin with [the letter] Bet? To start with a blessing [b'racha]. From this, we learn that the Torah is called a blessing, as it is said, 'Full [with the] blessing of YHVH, possess the sea and the south' (Deuteronomy 33:23). There is no sea other than Torah, as it is said, 'And broader than the sea' (Job 11:9). And what is 'Full with the blessing of God'? It means that every place that [the letter] Bet is said is the language of blessing. As we say, 'b'reishit'. And there is no beginning [ראשית] except wisdom, as it is said, 'The beginning [ראשית] of wisdom is the fear of YHVH' (Psalms 111:10). And there is no wisdom except [as the result of a] blessing, as it is said, 'And Elohim blessed Solomon,' and it is written, 'YHVH gave wisdom to Solomon' (1 Kings 5:26). This is comparable to a king that marries his daughter to his son and says to him [the son] at the wedding, 'Do with her as you will.'"

[Rabbi Berechiah continued,] "And what is the proof that this 'b'rachah' is from the word 'blessing' [baruch]? Perhaps it is from the language of [the word] 'knee' [berech]. As it is written, 'For to Me every knee will bend' (Isaiah 45:23). [God is] the Place [towards which] all knees bend. To what parable is this similar? To people who seek to see the face of the king, but do not know where His house is. First, they ask, 'Where is the house of the king?', and afterward [they can ask], 'Where is the king?' Therefore [it is written], 'For to Me every knee will bend' — even the highest ones — 'Every tongue will swear [loyalty to God]' (Isaiah 45:23)."

Rabbi Rachumai sat and expounded, "Why is it written 'And filled with the blessing of YHVH, inherit the sea and the south' (Deuteronomy 33:23)? In every place [where there is the letter] Bet, it is blessed. 'It' is the filling, as it is said, 'And the filling is the blessing of YHVH.' From there, the needy drink, and from the filling [God] took counsel in the beginning. To what parable is this similar? To a king who wants to build his palace in strong cliffs. He cut stones and chiseled boulders, and a spring of great waters — living waters — went out from it. The king said, 'Since I have waters bursting forth, I will plant a garden and I will delight in it — I and the whole world.' This is as it is written, 'And I was with Him as a confidant, and I was a source of delight every day [יום יום], to rejoice before Him at all times' (Proverbs 8:30). The Torah said, 'For two thousand years I was in the bosom of the Blessed Holy One,' as it is said 'A day, a day [יום יום]'. A day of the Blessed Holy One is a thousand years, as it is said, 'For a thousand years in Your eyes is like a yesterday that has passed' (Psalms 90:4). From then on, it is for times — as it is said, 'At every time' — but the remainder is for the world — as it is said, 'And I will breathe my praise to you' (Isaiah 48:9). What does it mean 'my praise'? As it is written, 'A song of praise of David, I will raise You high' (Psalms 145:1) Why is it 'praise'? Because 'I will raise You high.' And what is this elevation? Because 'I will bless Your name forever' (Psalms 145:2)."

As it is said, 'The beginning of wisdom is the fear of YHVH, good intelligence to all who do them' (Psalms 111:10). Thus Moses said, 'If you walk in His laws, you will inherit this world and the next world.' The world to come is compared to the sea, as it is said 'And [it is] wider than the sea' (Job 11:9). And this world is compared to the south, as it is said '[Give me a blessing,] for you have placed me in the land of the Negev [the southern desert]' (Joshua 15:19), and from our targum [this is translated into Aramaic as], 'Behold, the earth is the south' (Targum Jonathan, Joshua 15:19)."

In order that all the organs of man (Adam) will merit life in the world to come, which is compared to the sea [Ed.: Hebrew manuscripts often read "day," but it likely should be "sea." See above, #7]. So to speak, 'With him [Abraham] the building [i.e. - the structure of man] was completed.' As it is written, 'For in the image of Elohim, he made the Adam' (Genesis 9:6). Abraham in gematria is 248, which is the number of the organs of an adam."

[Rabbi Amorai continued,] "Why is it written 'He will inherit (ירשה)' (Deuteronomy 33:23)? It would have sufficed to say 'inherit' (רש) [in the imperative form]. Rather, even the Blessed Holy One is included, and thus, it is, 'inherit Yah [ירשה = רש יה]. To what is this comparable? To a king who had two treasuries and set aside one of them. After many days [literally, 'at the end days'], he said to his son, 'Take what there is in these two treasuries.' The son said, 'Perhaps he did not give me what he set aside.' He [the king] said, ‘Take everything.' And so it was written 'West and south, inherit Yah' (Deuteronomy 33:23) Inherit Yah and He will give you everything — if only you would guard My way."

As it is written, '[God] also puts eternity [העולם] in their hearts [i.e. - minds]' (Ecclesiastes 3:11) — Don’t read 'eternity [העולם], rather 'hidden [העלם]. Here is the version on Sefaria.] Rabbi Yochanon said, “On the second day, the angels were created, as it is written, 'He rafters the beams [of His upper chambers] in the waters' (Psalms 104:3), and it is written 'He makes the winds His messengers, fiery flames His servants' (Psalms 104:4)." But Rabbi Levitas ben Tavros said, "Everyone, even Rabbi Yochanan, agrees that the water already existed. But it was on the second day that ''He rafters the beams [of His upper chambers] in the waters,' the one who 'makes the clouds his chariot,' and the one who 'walks on the wings of the wind.' But His messengers were not created until the fifth day." [The Vilna Gaon's commentary suggests the following version.] Rabbi Yochanan said, "The angels were created on the second day. It is therefore written, 'He rafters the beams [of His upper chambers] in the waters, making the clouds a chariot, moving on the wings of the wind" (Psalm 104:3). It is then written, 'He makes the wind His angels' (Psalms 104:4)." Rabbi Chaninah said, "The creation of the angels was on the fifth day, as is said, 'And the birds that flew over the earth' (Genesis 1:20)." Rabbi Lulyani ben Tavrai said, "All agree that they [the angels] were not created on day one."

When He completed the pedestal, [the Earth] was strengthened by it, as is said, 'It will never be moved.’ What is its name? ‘Va’ed' [ועד] and the pedestal is ‘Earth' [עולם], thus it is ‘Olam Va’ed' [עולם ועד].”

Rabbi Berachyah said, “Why is it written, ‘And Elohim said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was [ויהי] light’ (Genesis 1:3), and not, ‘And there was [והיה] light’? A parable: a king that had a nice object and set it aside until he prepared for it a place and put it there. As it is written, 'Let there be light, and there was light' — that it already was [היה]."

Rabbi Amorai said, “Why is it written, ‘YHVH is a man of war’ (Exodus 15:3)?" Mar Rachumai said to him, "My teacher, you should not ask a simple word! Hear me, and I will advise you." He [Mar Rachumai] said to him, "To what may this be compared? To a king who had beautiful dwellings, who gave a name to every single one of them, and each one of them was better than the last. He said, 'I will give this dwelling that is named Aleph to my son. But the one named Yud is also good, and the one named Shin is also good!' What did he do? He gathered together all three, made one name from them, and made one house from them." He [Rabbi Amorai] said to him, "Until when will you conceal your words?!" He [Mar Rachumai] said to him, "My son, Aleph is first, Yud is second to her, Shin includes the whole world. Why does Shin include the whole world? Because teshuvah [repentance] is written with her."

His [Mar Rachumai's] students asked him, “What is Dalet?” He said to them, "To what can this be compared? To ten kings that were in the same place. Though all of them were rich, one of them was not as wealthy as the others. Even though he was very wealthy, he is called poor [dal] in relation to the wealthy ones.

They said to him, "But Hei is written after [Dalet]!" He said to them, "It is fitting for it to have been written, ' Gimmel Hei,' so why is it written, ' Gimmel Dalet'?" He said to them, "The Gimmel was switched in place of Dalet, in the head in the place of Hei. Dalet in the embellishment of the place of Hei."
