Blessed are You, Adonoy, our God, King of the Universe, Who causes the fetters of sleep to fall upon my eyes, and slumber upon my eyelids. May it be Your will, Adonoy, my God and God of my fathers to make me lie down in peace, and to raise me (again) to peace. Let my thoughts not terrify me— nor evil dreams or evil fancies (disturb me), and may my bed be perfect before You. And light up my eyes lest I sleep the sleep of death, for You illuminate the pupil of the eye. Blessed are You, Adonoy, Who illuminates the whole world with His glory.

It is proper for every God fearing man before going to sleep, to examine the deeds that he performed all day. If he finds that he committed a transgression he should regret and confess it and wholeheartedly resolve not to do so again. Especially the common transgressions, such as flattery, lies, mockery and gossip require careful scrutiny. A person should also resolve to forgive any person who sinned against him, so that no person be punished on account of him, for it is stated in the Talmud: "Whoever is the cause for another's punishment is not permitted to enter into the presence of the Holy One, blessed is He." He should say three times: "I forgive whoever hurt me" and afterwards say: Ribono shel olam, hareini mochel etc. ["Master of the Universe, I hereby forgive" etc.]

יֹ֭שֵׁב בְּסֵ֣תֶר עֶלְי֑וֹן בְּצֵ֥ל שַׁ֝דַּ֗י יִתְלוֹנָֽן׃

O thou that dwellest in the covert of the Most High, And abidest in the shadow of the Almighty;

Of the pestilence that walketh in darkness, Nor of the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
