Ben Zoma said: Who is wise? He who learns from every man, as it is said: “From all who taught me have I gained understanding” (Psalms 119:99). Who is mighty? He who subdues his [evil] inclination, as it is said: “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city” (Proverbs 16:32). Who is rich? He who rejoices in his lot, as it is said: “You shall enjoy the fruit of your labors, you shall be happy and you shall prosper” (Psalms 128:2) “You shall be happy” in this world, “and you shall prosper” in the world to come. Who is he that is honored? He who honors his fellow human beings as it is said: “For I honor those that honor Me, but those who spurn Me shall be dishonored” (I Samuel 2:30).

Berakhot 17a:8

Berakhot 17a:8 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

It was a favourite saying of the Rabbis of Jabneh : I am a creature [of God] and my neighbour is also His creature ; my work is in the city and his in the field ; I rise early to my work and he rises early to his. As he cannot excel in my work, so I cannot excel in his work. But perhaps thou sayest, "I do great things and he small things"! We have learnt that [it matters not whether] one does much or little, if only he direct his heart to Heaven.

Ecclesiastes 4:4-6 · JPS 1917

Again, I considered all labour and all excelling in work, that it is a man’s rivalry with his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

The fool foldeth his hands together, And eateth his own flesh.

Better is a handful of quietness, Than both the hands full of labour and striving after wind.

Psalms 73 · JPS 1917

A Psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, even to such as are pure in heart.

But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.

For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For there are no pangs at their death, and their body is sound.

In the trouble of man they are not; neither are they plagued like men.

Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment.

Their eyes stand forth from fatness; they are gone beyond the imaginations of their heart.

They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression; they speak as if there were none on high.

They have set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walketh through the earth.

Therefore His people return hither; And waters of fullness are drained out by them.

And they say: 'How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?'

Behold, such are the wicked; And they that are always at ease increase riches.

Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart, And washed my hands in innocency;

For all the day have I been plagued, And my chastisement came every morning.

If I had said: 'I will speak thus', Behold, I had been faithless to the generation of Thy children.

And when I pondered how I might know this, It was wearisome in mine eyes;

Until I entered into the sanctuary of God, And considered their end.

Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin.

How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

As a dream when one awaketh, So, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

For my heart was in a ferment, And I was pricked in my reins. .

But I was brutish, and ignorant; I was as a beast before Thee.

Nevertheless I am continually with Thee; Thou holdest my right hand.

Thou wilt guide me with Thy counsel, And afterward receive me with glory.

Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And beside Thee I desire none upon earth.

My flesh and my heart faileth; But God is the rock of my heart and my portion for ever.

For, lo, they that go far from Thee shall perish; Thou dost destroy all them that go astray from Thee.

But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Thy works.

Envy is the result of a feeling of inferiority. If one envies another's beauty, strength or wealth, then he is unhappy with what the Creator, blessed be He, has decreed for him. This is similar to a servant who complains concerning the deeds of his master, and is not pleased with his master's matters. Such a one is not a faithful servant. All the more so, ought he not to complain against the Creator, may He be Blessed, for all His deeds are righteous and proper, and one ought never to dispute them.

Rab Zotra b. Tobiah also said in the name of Rab : What means that which is written, "He hath made everything beautiful in its time" (Eccles. iii. 11)? It teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, makes every occupation agreeable in the eyes of those who follow it.

Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:14:1 · Sefaria Community Translation

You shall not covet: Many people have wondered about this commandment, how is is that a man not covet in his heart that which is beautiful [and] all that which appears pleasant in his eyes. I will give you a parable [to explain this]. You should know that a villager who thinks correctly and sees that the king's daughter is beautiful will not covet her in his heart, that he should sleep with her; as he knows that this is impossible. And this villager will not think like one of the lunatics that desires that he should have wings to fly in the sky, when it is not possible. [This is like] that which a man does not desire to sleep with his mother, even though she is beautiful, as they have accustomed him from his youth to know that it is forbidden to him. So must every enlightened person know that a beautiful woman or money is not attained by a person because of his wisdom or knowledge; rather it is from that which God apportioned to him. And Kohelet said, "(to that) [and to the one that did not toil in it], will he give it as his portion" (Ecclesiastes 2:21). And the sages said (Moed Katan 28a), "Children, life and sustenance - [this] matter does not depend on merit, but rather on the constellation." And because of this, the enlightened one will not desire and not covet. And once he knows that God forbade him the wife of his friend, it is more removed in his eyes than the daughter of the king is in the eyes of the villager. Therefore, he will 'rejoice in his portion' and he won't place in his heart to covet and desire something that is not his. Since he knows that God did not want to give it to him [and that] he is not able to take it with his power and thoughts and machinations. Hence, he will trust in his Creator, that He will provide for him and that He will do what is good in His eyes. And behold, the commentary on the Ten Commandments is completed....

An envious man does violence to his own soul, for he is constantly grieving and his intelligence grows less because of the abundance of jealousy concealed within him. His heart is not free to study and to pray with earnest intent and to do good deeds.

Therefore, a man should remove himself from envy and lust, and should not covet anything that belongs to others, and he should not say : "I covet some of the possessions of my companion, and I'll give him money so as to obtain those things," for if he does not want to part with these possessions, then it is prohibited to press him for he will be ashamed to turn him away empty handed. If a person does this, then he is like a robber — like one who compels another to do something against his will. All the more so if the one who covets is a respected man, for whom it is forbidden to ask anything of a companion if one does not know beforehand that he will give this gift to him with a willing heart.

A parable concerning this describes a lustful man and an envious man who were met by a certain king. The king said to them, "One of you may ask something of me, and I will give it to him, provided I give twice as much to his companion." The envious did not want to ask first for he was envious of his companion who would receive twice as much, and the lustful man wanted everything — wanted what belonged to both of them, so when the lustful man finally pressed the jealous man to ask for something, the jealous man asked the king to pluck out one of his eyes, because then his companion would have both eyes plucked out.
