Rabbi Yohanan visits the sick

Berakhot 5b:10-16 · Tractate Berakot by A. Cohen

R. Hiyya b. Abba was ill and R. Johanan went in to visit him. He said to him, "Are thy sufferings dear to thee ?" "No," he replied, "neither they nor the reward they bring." R. Johanan said to him, "Give me thy hand." He gave him his hand and R. Johanan raised him.

R. Johanan was ill and R. Hannina went in to visit him. He said to him, "Are thy sufferings dear to thee?" "No," he replied, "neither they nor the reward they bring." R. Hannina said to him, "Give me thy hand." He gave him his hand and R. Hannina raised him.

Why? Why did not R. Johanan raise himself ?

They answer : A prisoner does not release himself from the dungeon.

R. Eleazar was ill and R. Johanan went in to visit him. He saw that he was lying in a dark room, so he bared his arm and a brightness was radiated therefrom. He then noticed that R. Eleazar was weeping. He said to him, "Why weepest thou? Is it because thou hast not applied thyself sufficiently to the study of Torah ? We have learnt that it matters not whether one does much or little, so long as he directs his heart to Heaven ! Is it because of [the lack of] food? Not everyone has the merit of two tables! Is it because of childlessness? This is the bone of my tenth son!"

R. Eleazar answered him, "I weep because of this beauty which will decay in the earth." R. Johanan said to him, "Well dost thou weep on that account" ; and they both wept.

After a while, he said to him, "Are thy sufferings dear to thee?" He replied, "Neither they nor the reward they bring." He said to him, "Give me thy hand." He gave him his hand and R. Johanan raised him.

A Psalm; a Song at the Dedication of the House; of David.

I will extol thee, O LORD, for Thou hast raised me up, and hast not suffered mine enemies to rejoice over me.

O LORD my God, I cried unto Thee, and Thou didst heal me;

O LORD, Thou broughtest up my soul from the nether-world; Thou didst kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

Sing praise unto the LORD, O ye His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name.

For His anger is but for a moment, His favour is for a life-time; weeping may tarry for the night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Now I had said in my security: 'I shall never be moved.'

Thou hadst established, O LORD, in Thy favour my mountain as a stronghold— Thou didst hide Thy face; I was affrighted.

Unto Thee, O LORD, did I call, And unto the LORD I made supplication:

'What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise Thee? shall it declare Thy truth?

Hear, O LORD, and be gracious unto me; LORD, be Thou my helper.'

Thou didst turn for me my mourning into dancing; Thou didst loose my sackcloth, and gird me with gladness;

So that my glory may sing praise to Thee, and not be silent; O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever.

Hezekiah’s prayer

Isaiah 38:1-5 · JPS 1917

In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him: ‘Thus saith the LORD: Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.’

Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD,

and said: ‘Remember now, O LORD, I beseech Thee, how I have walked before Thee in truth and with a whole heart, and have done that which is good in Thy sight.’ And Hezekiah wept sore.

Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying:

’Go, and say to Hezekiah: Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father: I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears; behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

Rabbi Akiva visits his student

Nedarim 40a:1-2 · Sefaria Community Translation

There is a story about one of Rabbi Avika's students who became sick. The sages did not come to visit him. Rabbi Akiva came in to visit him, and because he showed him respect and sat in front of him, the student lived. He told him Rabbi, you made me live. Rabbi Akiva left and taught, "He who does not visit the sick is as one who spills blood".

Rav Dimi said about this: "He who visits the sick makes him live, and he who does not visit the sick causes him to die". Why is that? Is it that he who visits the sick prays for mercy for them to live, and he who doesn't prays for mercy for them to die? Don't think that. The reason is he who does not visit the sick does not pray for mercy for them, not to live and not to die.

[As R. Aha said:] Who goes in to have himself cupped should say, "May it be Thy will, O Lord my God, that this operation be a cure for me, and do Thou heal me for Thou art a faithful Healer and Thy cure is certain, since it is not the way of human beings to cure, but thus are they accustomed."

Rather, To follow the character traits of G-d. "Just as he clothes the naked, as it is written, 'And the Lord G-d made for Adam and his wife cloaks of leather, and he clothed them (Genesis 3:21);' so too you shall clothe the naked. The Holy One, Blessed be He, visited the sick, as it is written, 'And he appeared in Ailonei Mamrei [while Abraam was in pain] (Genesis 18:1);' so too you shall visit the sick. The Holy One, Blessed be He, comforted mourners, as it is written, 'And it was, after the death of Abraham, and G-d blessed his son Isaac (Genesis 25:11);' so too you shall comfort mourners. The Holy One, Blessed be He, buried the dead, as it is written, 'And he buried him in the valley (Deuteronomy 34:6);' so too, you shall bury the dead."
