"And the Earth was formless and void ( tohu vavohu)" (Genesis 1:2); Rabbi Berachyah began: "Even a child is known by his doings" (Proverbs 20:11). Rabbi Berachya said "While the earth was in unripened youth, she produced thorns; and so the prophet would prophesy of her: "I beheld the earth, and see, it was formless and void ( tohu vavohu)." (Jeremiah 4:23).

"At midnight (Ruth 3:8)": "I arise at midnight to praise You for the judgments of Your righteousness (Psalm 119:62)." Rabbi Pinchas in the name of Rabbi Eliezer son of Jacob: "the harp and the lyre were set above the head of David and when he was awakened in the middle of the night, he stood and played on them". Rabbi Levi said: the the harp was hung "for the judgments of Your righteousness", the "judgments" that you brought to Pharaoh, as it is said: "But Hashem afflicted Pharaoh and his household with mighty plagues (Genesis 12:17)", and the "righteousness" that is what you did with Abraham and Sarah". Another interpretation: "for the judgments of Your righteousness", the "judgments" that you brought on the Egyptians and the "righteousness, what you did with our fathers in Egypt, since it was not possible for them to perform themselves the mitzvot and they would be saved, and you gave to them two mitzvot which they were to perform them selves and they would be saved, and they were these: the blood of Passover and the blood of circumcision. Rabbi Levi said "on the same night the blood of Passover was mixed with the blood of circumcision, as it is said: "When I passed by you and saw you wallowing in your blood, I said to you: “Live in spite of your blood.” Yea, I said to you: “Live in spite of your blood (Ezekiel 16:6)"." Another interpretation: "for the judgments of Your righteousness", the "judgments are those which you brought on the Ammonites and Moabites, and the "righteousness" what you did with my [David's] grandfather and grandmother, because if he afflicted her with a curse once, and from where would I have come?, and you placed in his heart to bless her, as it is said: "Blessed are you to Hashem, my daughter (Ruth 3:10)": "A man’s fears become a trap for him, But he who trusts in Hashem shall be safeguarded (Proverbs 29:25)". Rabbi Akiva went on a journey to Rome and he said to a son of his house: "go and buy me something pleasing to everyone from the market" and he went and bought fowl for him, and he said to him: "why were you so long? Did you have to trap them?" And he said: "[yes] because they are frightened of people", and Akiva read to him this verse: "A man’s fears become a trap for him". The fear (trembling) is that which Jacob caused Isaac, as it is written: "Isaac was seized with very violent trembling (Genesis 27:33)." And justly he could have cursed him, but rather "But he who trusts in Hashem shall be safeguarded" and you placed it in his heart to bless him, as it is said: "now he must remain blessed!(Genesis 27:33)". This fear, that is what Ruth caused Boaz, as it is said "the man was frightened, and turned himself (Ruth 3:8)". And he justly could have cursed her, but rather "But he who trusts in Hashem shall be safeguarded" and you placed it in his heart to bless her, as it is said "Blessed are you to Hashem, my daughter (Ruth 3:10)". "And he turned himself" she clasped him like ivy and he began to touch her hair, and said "spirits do not have hair" and so he said to her "who are you", a spirit or a woman, and she said "a woman". "Are you unmarried or a man's wife?" and she said to him "unmarried". "Are you unclean or clean" and she said to him "clean". "And, behold, a woman", the cleanest of all the women "lay at his feet", as it is said "And he said 'who are you?' and she said 'I am Ruth your maidservant (Ruth 3:9)". Rabbi Berechyah said: "curesed are the wicked, as there it is written "she caught hold of him by his garment and said, “Lie with me!” (Genesis 39:12)" but here "spread therefore your cloak over your handmaid (Ruth 3:9)".

"And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before (btrwm) one could discern another. For he said: 'Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.' (Ruth 3:14)": Rabbi Berechya said " before (beterem) one could" but what is written is btrwm; this teaches that she waited six hours, as the count of waw [the extra w in btrwm] is six. For he said: 'Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.' To whom did he say this? Rabbi Meir said: "to a boy of his household". Rabbi Chunya and Rabbi Jeremiah in the name of Rabbi Samuel the son of Rav Yitzchak: "All that very night Boaz was prostrated in prayer on his face, saying: "Master of Worlds, let it be revealed and known before you that I did not touch her, and so may it be your will that 'it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.' and the name of Heaven not be desecrated because of me"".

Rabbi Abba son of Kahana began: "So tremble, and sin no more; ponder it on your bed, and sigh (Psalms 4:5)": "tremble and sin no more", David said before the Holy One, blessed be He, until when are they going to cause me to tremble and say 'his family is illegitimate and is he not from Ruth the Moabitess?'" "Ponder it on your bed, and sigh": but did you not come from two sisters" Look at how your roots are and be quiet. And also Tamar who took Judah your ancestor, did he not invalidate the family? And on top of that she was the daughter of Shem the son of Noah! What connection do you trace for yourselves?" Rabbi Jacob the son of Aviyyah said: "tremble" at your yetzer and do not sin". And the Rabbis said: "upset your yetzer and do not sin". "These ('eleh) are the generations of Peretz (Ruth 4:18). Rabbi Abba said every place that "these" ('eleh) is said it invalidates the first verse but "and these" (ve'eleh) increases the first verse. "And Hezron bore Ram (Ruth 4:19)": and was not Jerahmeel the son of Kadmai? "The sons of Hezron that were born to him: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai (1 Chronicles 2:26)"? He married a Canaanite woman to adorn (lehit'ater) himself, as it is written: "Jerahmeel had another wife, whose name was 'Atarah (1 Chronicles 2:26)". "And Ram bore Amminadab and Salmon (Ruth 4:20)", but rather because they made ladders (sullamot) for princes and then they made ladders for kings. Rabbi Yitzchak began: "Then ('az) I said, “Then I said: See, I will bring (Psalm 40:8)": 'I had to say a song when I came'. And it is not "then" ('az) but rather a song, as it is said: "Then ('az) Moses and the Israelites sang this song (Exodus 15:1)": from this I was not able to come and I came "with a scroll (megillat sefer) recounting what befell me (Psalm 40:8)". "With a scroll": (megillah)"Which You have denied admission into Your community (Lamentations 1:1)". "Of a book (sefer): "No Ammonite or Moabite shall be admitted into the congregation (Deuteronomy 23:4)". And I did not come by this law, but rather by a scroll and a book written about me. "In a scroll": Perez, Hezron, Ram, Aminadab, Nahson, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, David. "In a book": "And Hashem said, “Rise and anoint him, for this is the one (1 Samuel 16:12)". Rabbi Huna says: "It is written: "God has provided me with another seed (Genesis 4:25)": the seed will come from another place, and who is this? This is the King Messiah". Rabbi Berachya and Rabbi Simon: "there is a parable of a king who was traveling from place to place and a pearl fell from his head. The king stood up and all of his servants there and the people walking by were saying: 'what is up with the king and all of his servants here?' And they saw and said: "A pearl has fallen from his head". What did he do? He heaped up the dust and brought in brooms and swept one pile and he did not find it. And the second, and he did not find it. And the third, and he found it. So they said the king found his pearl. So the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Abraham: "Go for yourself from your native land (Genesis 12:1)". "For you I have waited, why do I need to trace the connection of Shem, Arpachsad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Nahor, Terah?Only because of you "Abram, he is Abraham (1 Chronicles 1:27) and "you found his heart faithful before you" (Nehemiah 9:8)". And so said the Holy One, blessed be He, to David: "Why do I need to trace the connection of Perez, Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahson, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse? Is it not because of you: "I have found David, my servant (Psalms 89:21)".

"Terror (balahot) tumbles (hahpakh) upon me (Job 30:15)": Rabbi Chanina said: "The assembly of Israel said before the Holy One, blessed be He: "In the past I was terrifying others, and this verse supports it: "And hurriedly (vayyavhilu) brought Haman (Esther 6:14)", and another verse says: "I will make you a horror (balahot) (Ezekiel 26:21)", and another says: "Now are the clans of Edom dismayed (nivhalu) (Exodus 15:15)". But now it is turned (hafukhah) on me". Rabbi Acha said: "Like a column fragment which rolls (mithapekhet) around the palace and it lodges on a pebble and is stopped (nismekhah), so: "Your fury lies heavy (samkhah) upon me (Psalm 88:8)". " It sweeps away my honor (nedivati) like the wind (Job 30:15): Humans who are willing (nedivim) and are seen to come to me, redemption is in their hands, and you sweep them away like the wind. "My dignity (yeshu'ati) vanishes like a cloud (Job 30:15)": Humans who are willing and are seen to come to me, salvation (yeshu'ah) is in their hands, but you drive them away like a cloud, as it is said: "Alas! Hashem in His wrath Has shamed the daughter of Zion (Lamentations 2:1)". And it is written: "Like the nations that Hashem will cause to perish before you, so you will perish (Deuteronomy 8:20): you will say: "Why [will you perish like the Canaanites]?". Because [they on account] of the priest and the prophet, so too because of the priest and the prophet, and "Why?". Because of the shofar and trumpet, so too because of the shofar and trumpet, and "Why?". Because of the fourteen [nations] as it is said: "Denites and Apharesatechites, Tarpelites, Apharesites, Archavites, Babylonians, Susites, Dehites, and and other peoples whom the great and glorious Osnappar deported and settled (Ezra 4:9-10)". And you will say: "There are fourteen, as it is written: "In that day, their fortress cities shall be like the deserted sites which the Horesh and the Amir abandoned (Isaiah 17:19)". What does Amir mean? Rabbi Pinchas said: "As I said (kide'imrei)". Rabbi Yehudah son of Rabbi Simon said: "As it is said in the Torah, it is written: "Like the nations that Hashem will cause to perish before you". You will say: "Why [did they perish]?". With the fall of a wall, as it is written: "And the wall fell upon them (Joshua 6:20)". So these too by the fall od a wall, as it is written: "They enter the clouds (be'avim), they clamber up the rocks (Jeremiah 4:29)", so these with clouds: "Alas! Hashem in His wrath Has shamed (ya'iv) the daughter of Zion"....

Rabbi Chiyya taught: "Coals, are they able to be dim? This teaches us that it is fire. If it is fire, then it can burn. This teaches us about coals, as he brings from the the glowing coals". "The sacred gems are spilled at every street corner": They are the companions of sages who went and worked. So it was written about them: "The sacred gems are spilled at every street corner". Another interpretation: it refers to Josiah. "Alas! The gold is dulled": because he was like an ornament of gold. "Debased the finest gold! ": because his body was like a beautiful gem and pearl. "The sacred gems are spilled at every street corner": these are the two revi'it of blood which Jeremiah collected and buried. See! It is written: "There he died, and was buried in the graves of his fathers (2 Chronicles 35:24)". In how many tombs was he entombed? It says in the "graves" of his fathers": these are the two revi'it of blood which Jeremiah collected and buried. Another interpretation: it refers to them men od Jerusalem who were like an ornament of gold, and their bodies were like beautiful gems and pears, and if he will say to you that "man" is not written meaning "men of Jerusalem" say to him: "It was previously written: "The precious children of Zion (Lamentations 4:2)".

"Remember, God, what happened to us..." (Lamentations 5:1) - Rabbi Yitzchak began: (Proverbs 30:31) "The greyhound or the male goat..." The way of the world is that when a person raises two greyhounds in his house, one big and one small, he puts the big one in front, [in case the big one is attacked,] a mercy on his expenses. Rabbi Berachia said: Israel said before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Master of the World, doesn't it say in your Torah, (Deuteronomy 25:17) 'Remember what Amalek did to you...'? He did it to us, but not to You? Didn't he destroy Your Temple? The Rabbanan said: Israel said before the Holy One, blessed be He, we are Yours and the nations of the world are Yours, why don't You have mercy on Your nation? "And the king against whom there is no rising up" (Proverbs 30:31): Rabbi Yitzchak said: Israel said to the Holy One, blessed be He, "Forgetfulness is among us, but it is not among You, nor before You. Therefore, remember! (Psalms 137:7) "Remember, God, the people of Edom on the day of Jerusalem; who said, "Aru, Aru", even to the foundation thereof." Rabbi Abba bar Kahana said: ["Aru, Aru" means] "Destroy, Destroy". And Rabbi Levi said: ["Aru, Aru" means] "Raze, Raze". the one who says, "Destroy, Destroy" uses the verse (Jeremiah 51:58) "Babylon's thick walls will be "Ar'er tit'ar'er" - "totally demolished"". The one who said "Raze, Raze" uses the verse (Psalms 137:7) "even the foundations thereof", even to it's bottommost foundations. "Look, see our shame" (Lamentations 5:1) - Rabbi Yudan said: Looking is up close, seeing is from afar. "Looking is up close", as is written, (I Kings 19:6) "And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake cooked on hot coals..." "Seeing is from afar", as is written, (Genesis 22:4) "And he saw the place from afar." Rabbi Pinchas said: Looking is from afar, as is written, (Psalms 80:14), "Look from the heavens and see." Seeing is up close, as is written, (Genesis 32:26), "And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh."

The words of Koheleth, king in Jerusalem. Midrash: This is to say that this the writing is done with "ruach hakodesh" (divine inspiration) by the hand of King Solomon (Mishlei 22:29). You see [that the work of] a man [who is] adept at his trade will endure [when it is done] in front of kings. It happened that Rebbe Chanina ben Dosa saw people in his city taking up vow-offerings and free-will offerings to Jerusalem. He said, "Everyone is bringing up vow-offerings and free-will offerings to Jerusalem, and I don't have a thing to bring up." What did he do? He went to the walkway of his city and saw one stone and chipped it, chiseled it, and polished it and said: "Now I have something to bring up to Jerusalem." He sought to hire workers. Five men passed by him. He said to them "Will you take this stone for me up to Jerusalem?" They said to him, "Give us 5 Selayim [currency] and we will bring it up to Jerusalem." He sought it for them but he could not find a single thing...

“I said in my heart: Come now, I will experiment in joy, and see goodness; and, behold, it too is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 2:1). “I said in my heart: Come now, I will experiment in joy” – Rabbi Pinḥas and Rabbi Ḥizkiyya in the name of Rabbi Simon bar Zavdi: Rabbi Pinḥas said: “I will experiment [anasekha]” and I will experiment; I will try matters of Torah and I will try matters of heresy. I will flee [anusa] from matters of heresy to matters of Torah, “and see goodness,” the goodness of Torah. “And, behold, it too is vanity” – the verse should have said only: “And behold, it too is joy,” and you say: “And, behold, it too is vanity”? Rabbi Ḥizkiyya said in the name of Rabbi Simon bar Zavdi: All the Torah that you study in this world is vanity relative to the Torah in the World to Come, as in this world, a person studies Torah and forgets. But, regarding the World to Come, what is written there? “I placed My Torah in their midst” (Jeremiah 31:32). And the Rabbis say: The evil inclination will melt before the good inclination. “And see goodness” – the goodness of the World to Come. Rabbi Yona in the name of Rabbi Simon bar Zevid: Any serenity that a person sees in this world is vanity relative to the serenity of the World to Come, as in this world, a person dies and bequeaths his serenity to another, but regarding the World to Come it is written: “They will not build and another inhabit” (Isaiah 65:22).

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). There was a time for Adam the first man to enter the Garden of Eden, as it is stated: “He placed him in the Garden of Eden” (Genesis 2:15). And there was a time to depart from there, as it is stated: “He banished the man…” (Genesis 3:24). There was a time for Noah to enter the ark, as it is stated: “Come…to the ark” (Genesis 7:1). And there was a time to emerge from there, as it is stated: “Emerge from the ark” (Genesis 8:16). There was a time for the [mitzva of] circumcision to be given to Abraham, as it is stated: “You shall observe My covenant” (Genesis 17:9). And there was a time for his descendants to be circumcised, [and for many] of them to be circumcised [at once. This occurred] in two places, once in Egypt and once in the wilderness, as it is stated: “All the people who departed were circumcised [and all the people born in the wilderness…were not circumcised]” (Joshua 5:5). “And a time for every purpose under the heavens” – there was a time for the Torah to be given to Israel. Rav Beivai said: It was time for a certain thing that was located above the heavens to now be given under the heavens. What is that? It is the Torah, as it is stated: “God spoke all these matters, saying” (Exodus 20:1).

“I returned and saw all the oppressions that are performed under the sun; and behold the tears of the oppressed, and they have no one to comfort them; and their oppressors possess power, but they have no one to comfort them” (Ecclesiastes 4:1). “I returned and saw” – Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Neḥemya, and the Rabbis: Rabbi Yehuda says: These are the children who, due to the iniquities of their fathers, are taken during their lifetimes in this world. In the World to Come, they stand on the side of the group of the righteous, and their fathers stand on the side of the group of the wicked. They say before [God]: ‘Master of the universe, did we not die only due to the iniquities of our fathers? Let our fathers enter [the group of the righteous] on the basis of our merits.’ He says to them: ‘Your fathers sinned after you died, and their sins condemn them.’ Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Ilai [said] in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi: At that time Elijah the prophet, may he be remembered for good, will sit and teach them a defense, and say to them: ‘Say before Him: Master of the universe, which attribute is greater, the attribute of beneficence or the attribute of punishment? Say that the attribute of beneficence is greater and the attribute of punishment is lesser. We died due to the iniquities of our fathers. If the attribute of beneficence is greater, all the more so our fathers should come to us.’ [God] will say to them: ‘You have advocated well; they will come to you,’ as it is written: “They shall live with their children and return” (Zechariah 10:9), [teaching] that they return from descending to Gehenna and they are rescued due to the merit of their children. Therefore, every person is obligated to teach his son Torah, so that he will save him from Gehenna. Rabbi Ḥanina interpreted the verse regarding those executed by the monarchy, who come to the life of the World to Come even though they do not confess. Rabbi Binyamin interpreted the verse regarding those who engage in Torah disingenuously. The entire people think they are well versed in Bible, but they are not well versed in Bible; well versed in Mishna, but they are not well versed in Mishna. He is clad in his caftan with phylacteries on his head. “And behold the tears of the oppressed, and they have no one to comfort them” – the Holy One blessed be He said: It is incumbent upon Me to exact retribution from them, as it is stated: “Cursed is one who performs the labor of the Lord deceitfully” (Jeremiah 48:10). The Rabbis interpreted the verse regarding the nations of the world. “And behold the tears of the oppressed, and they have no one to comfort them” – The Holy One blessed be He said: It is incumbent upon Me to contend with them, as it is written: “Their Redeemer is strong, the Lord of hosts is His name; He will champion their cause” (Jeremiah 50:34). Daniel the tailor interpreted the verse regarding mamzerim. These [the oppressed] are the mamzerim themselves, and who is it [who oppresses him]? It is the one who engaged in relations with a woman who is forbidden to him and begot him. What sin did this one [the mamzer] commit, and what is his connection to it? Rabbi Yehuda ben Pazi said: Even the mamzer enters the World to Come, as it is written: “And behold the tears of the oppressed...” The Holy One blessed be He says: In this world they are unfit [to enter the community], but regarding the future, Zechariah said: I have seen it and they are pure gold, as it is stated: “And behold a candelabrum entirely of gold…and there are two olives upon it [with its bowl [gulah] at its top]” (Zechariah 4:2). Two amora’im [explain the latter phrase of the verse]; one says: Its exile [gola] and one says its Redeemer [go’ala]. The one who says gola, it is the exile in Babylon and the exile of the Divine Presence with them. The one who says go’ala, it is redemption, as it is written: “Our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name” (Isaiah 47:4), and it is written: “The one who breaks out will go up before them…[with the Lord at their head]” (Micah 2:13).

“For the dream comes with much concern; and a fool's voice with many words” (Ecclesiastes 5:2). “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon the generation of the Flood were due to the many evil concerns in which they engaged. “And a fool’s voice with many words” – due to the many words that they expressed from their mouths, and said: “What is the Almighty that we should serve Him…” (Job 21:15). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon the generation of the Dispersion were due to the many evil concerns in which they engaged. “And a fool’s voice with many words” – as they said: “And we will make a name for ourselves…” (Genesis 11:4). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon the Sodomites were due to the many evil concerns in which they engaged. “And a fool’s voice with many words” – as they said: Let the convention of passersby be forgotten from among us; that is what is written: “And it forgets that a foot may crush it or a beast of the field trample it” (Job 39:15). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon the Egyptians were due to the many evil concerns in which they engaged. “And a fool’s voice with many words” – as they said: “Who is the Lord that I should heed His voice…” (Exodus 5:2). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon Sisera were due to the many evil concerns in which he engaged. “And a fool's voice with many words” – as it is stated: “He oppressed the children of Israel…” (Judges 4:3). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern,” all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon Sennacherib were due to the many evil concerns in which he engaged. “And a fool's voice with many words” – because he cursed and blasphemed, as it is stated: “Who among the gods of all these lands rescued their land [from my hand, that the Lord will rescue Jerusalem from my hand?”] (Isaiah 36:20). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon the tribes of Judah and Benjamin were due to the many evil concerns in which they engaged, as it is stated: “They denied the Lord” (Jeremiah 5:12). Another matter: “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon Nebuchadnezzar were due to the many evil concerns in which he engaged, as it is stated: “Who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?” (Daniel 3:15). Another matter “For the dream comes with much concern” – all the pain and suffering that the Holy One blessed be He brought upon Belshatzar were due to the many evil concerns in which he engaged, as it is written: “They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver…” (Daniel 5:4). Likewise, you find regarding Pharaoh, as it is stated: “It was at the end of two full years [that Pharaoh dreamed]” (Genesis 41:1). Pharaoh said: Who watches over whom; is it I over my god or my god over me? Is it not I who watches over my god? That is what is written: “It was at the end of two full years [that Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he was standing over the Nile].” Likewise you find regarding Aḥashverosh; Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Simon said: All night, Aḥashverosh was seeing Haman standing over him, with his sword drawn in his hand, removing his royal garment from upon him and his crown from upon his head, and seeking to kill him. He would awaken and say: What is this dream? This is a vision. Until when? Until the morning came. The king said: “Who is in the courtyard?” (Esther 6:4). They said to him: “Behold, it is Haman standing in the courtyard” (Esther 6:5). He said: ‘This is the dream’; “for the dream comes with much concern.” “Haman had come to the outer courtyard of the king’s palace, to say to the king to hang Mordekhai on the gallows that he had prepared for him” (Esther 6:4), [for himself] and for his comrades. [Similarly] it is written: “He prepared weapons of death for himself; his arrows will act against pursuers [ledolekim]” (Psalms 7:14). What is ledolekim? Rabbi [Yehuda HaNasi] said: These are the wicked who cast fire [delek] upon them. Rabbi Yaakov of Kefar Ḥanan said: These are those who ignited the fire in the destruction of the Temple. The Rabbis say: These are the pursuers of Israel, as it is written: “On the mountains they pursued us” (Lamentations 4:19). “Haman said in his heart” (Esther 6:6) – the wicked are under the control of their heart, as it is stated: “Esau said in his heart” (Genesis 27:41), “Yerovam said in his heart” (I Kings 12:26). However, the righteous, their hearts are under their control, as it is written: “Hannah, she was speaking to her heart” (I Samuel 1:13), “David said to his heart” (I Samuel 27:1), “Daniel resolved in his heart” (Daniel 1:8). They are similar to their Creator, as it is stated: “The Lord said to His heart” (Genesis 8:21). Rabbi Levi and the Rabbis: Rabbi Levi said: They think evil in their heart, and I think good in My heart. They think evil in their heart, and I judge them regarding their heart, as it is stated: “Their sword will come into their heart” (Psalms 37:15). “Haman said in his heart” (Esther 6:6) – immediately, Haman responded and said: “Let them bring a royal garment” (Esther 6:8). He said to [Aḥashverosh]: ‘You have many garments, but [have them bring] the “royal garment,” the one that you wore on the day that you were crowned.’ “And a horse upon which the king has ridden” (Esther 6:8) – he said to [Aḥashverosh]: ‘You have many horses, but [have them bring] the horse upon which you rode on the day you were crowned.’ “And on whose head the royal crown was placed” (Esther 6:8) – when [Haman] mentioned the crown to him, his face contorted. [Aḥashverosh] said: ‘His time has come.’ That is what is written: “For the dream comes with much concern; and a fool's voice with many words.”

“There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it is prevalent among men” (Ecclesiastes 6:1). “There is an evil that I have seen under the sun.” Rabbi Shmuel bar Ami said: This is the thought of swindlers, like one who mixes water into wine, poppy oil into [olive] oil, spring water into honey, donkey milk into balsam oil, sap into myrrh, grape leaves into valuable pollen, water dyed red into fish brine, vetch into pepper, [or one who uses] a scale beam that is long on one side and short on the other side. Regarding all these, Rabbi Yoḥanan ben Zakkai said: Woe is me if I say it, and woe is me if I do not say it. If I say it, perhaps the swindlers will learn [new techniques for swindling]. If I do not say it, the swindlers will say: The Torah scholars are not conversant in our handiwork. Ultimately, he said it, “for the ways of the Lord are straight, the righteous walk in them [and the transgressors stumble in them]” (Hosea 14:10).

“A good name is better than fine oil, and the day of death than the day of one's birth” (Ecclesiastes 7:1). “A good name is better than fine oil.” Fine oil descends, a good name ascends. Fine oil is temporary, a good name is eternal. Fine oil is finite, a good name is infinite. Fine oil costs money, a good name is free. Fine oil is for the living, a good name is for the living and for the dead. Fine oil is for the wealthy, a good name is for the poor and the wealthy. Fine oil wafts from the inner chamber to the banquet hall, a good name carries from one end of the world to the other end. Fine oil falls on a corpse and putrefies, as it is stated: “Flies of death putrefy and ferment blended oil” (Ecclesiastes 10:1). A good name falls on the dead and does not putrefy, as it is stated: “He went up and stretched himself upon the boy […and the lad opened his eyes]” (II Kings 4:35). Fine oil falls on water and disperses, a good name falls on water and does not disperse, as it is stated: “The Lord said to Jonah and it spewed Jonah out” (Jonah 2:11). Fine oil falls onto fire and burns, a good name falls on fire and does not burn, as it is written: “Then…they emerged [from within the fire]” (Daniel 3:26). Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Simon said: We have found those with fine oil who entered a place of life and emerged burned, and those with a good name who entered a place of death and emerged alive. Nadav and Avihu entered a place of life and died. Ḥananya, Mishael, and Azarya entered a fiery furnace and emerged alive. Therefore, it is stated: “A good name is better than fine oil…”

“Who is like the wise man, and who knows the meaning of a matter? The wisdom of a man illuminates his face, and the boldness of his face is changed” (Ecclesiastes 8:1). “Who is like the wise man” – this is the Holy One blessed be He, in whose regard it is written: “Wise of heart, mighty in strength” (Job 9:4). “And who knows the meaning of a matter” – for He explained the Torah to Moses. “The wisdom of a man illuminates his face” – Rabbi Shimon said: Great is the ability of the prophets, as they compare the [human] form to its maker, as it is written: “I heard the voice of a man between the banks of Ulai” (Daniel 8:16). Rabbi Yudan said: We have a verse that is clearer than that, as it is written: “And upon the likeness of the throne there was a likeness like the appearance of a man upon it, from above” (Ezekiel 1:26). “And the boldness of his face is changed” – He changes from the attribute of justice to the attribute of mercy regarding Israel.

“Everything is as it is for everyone; there is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked, for the good, for the pure and for the impure, for one who sacrifices and for one who does not sacrifice; like the good, so is the sinner; one who takes an oath is like one who is apprehensive of an oath” (Ecclesiastes 9:2). Rabbi Shimon bar Abba began: “Everything is as it is for everyone; there is one fate for the righteous” – this is Noah, as it is stated: “Noah was a righteous man, he was faultless” (Genesis 6:9). They said that when he emerged from the ark, a lion bit him and injured him, and he was limping. “And for the wicked” – this is Pharaoh. They said that when Pharaoh came to sit on Solomon’s throne, that he took as payment for his daughter’s marriage contract, he did not know its mechanism, and a lion bit him and injured him, and he was limping. This one died with a limp, and that one died with a limp; that is: “There is one fate for the righteous and for the wicked.” “For the good” – this is Moses, as it is stated: “She saw him, that he was good” (Exodus 2:2). Rabbi Meir said: “Good” – that he was circumcised. “And for the pure” – this is Aaron, who was engaged in the purification of Israel. “And for the impure” – these are the scouts who spoke slander about the Land and did not enter the Land. These spoke of the goodness and praise of the Land of Israel, and did not enter it. “For one who sacrifices” – this is Josiah, as it is written: “Josiah donated to the members of the people…[for the paschal offering]” (II Chronicles 35:7). “And for one who does not sacrifice” – this is Ahab, who abolished offerings from upon the altar. This one died with arrows, and that one died with arrows. “Like the good” – this is David, in whose regard it is written: “And of good appearance” (I Samuel 16:12). Rabbi Yitzḥak said: Of good appearance in halakha, as anyone who would see him would remember his learning. “So is the sinner” – this is Nebuchadnezzar, as it is written: “Redeem your sins with charity” (Daniel 4:24). This one built the Temple and ruled for forty years, that one destroyed it and ruled for forty years; that is: “One fate.” “One who takes an oath” – this is Zedekiah, as it is written: “[He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar,] who had administered an oath to him [by God]” (II Chronicles 36:13). On what [object] did he administer the oath? Rabbi Yosei said: He administered the oath to him on the covenant. Rabbi said: He administered the oath to him on the altar. “Is like one who is apprehensive of an oath” – this is Samson, as it is stated: “Take an oath to me” (Judges 15:12). This one died with his eyes gouged out, and that one died with his eyes gouged out. Another matter, “for the righteous” – these are Aaron’s sons. “And for the wicked” – this is the congregation of Koraḥ. These entered to sacrifice in dispute and emerged burned, and the sons of Aaron, who did not enter in dispute, [also] emerged burned; that is what is written: “After the death of the two sons of Aaron…” (Leviticus 16:1).

“Dead flies spoil and froth a perfumer’s oil; a little folly is weightier than wisdom, than honor” (Ecclesiastes 10:1). “Dead flies spoil and froth a perfumer’s oil” – ben Azai and Rabbi Akiva: ben Azai said: Does one fly that dies not spoil and froth a perfumer’s oil? So too does a single sin that one performs will cause a person to lose much good. Rabbi Akiva expounded: “Therefore, the netherworld has expanded itself, and opened its mouth without limit [ḥok]” (Isaiah 5:14). It is not written ḥukim, but rather “without ḥok,” one who does not have mitzvot to tip the scales in favor of his virtues. Those who engage in allegorical interpretations of the Torah say: A person is judged on the basis of the majority of his [deeds]. A person should always assess himself as though he is half virtuous and half guilty; if he performs one mitzva, happy is he, as he tipped his scales in favor of virtue, if he performs one transgression, woe is he, as he tipped his scales in favor of guilt. Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar said: Because the individual is judged on the basis of the majority of his [deeds], and the world is judged on the basis of its majority, with the single transgression that this one [individual] performs, he causes himself and the world to lose much good.

“Cast your bread on the surface of the water, for after many days you will find it (Ecclesiastes 11:1). “Cast your bread on the surface of the water” – Rabbi Beivai said: If you sought to perform charity, perform it with those who toil in Torah study, as water stated here is nothing other than words of Torah, as it is stated: “Anyone thirsty, go to water” (Isaiah 55:1). Rabbi Akiva said: When I was coming by sea, I saw a ship that sank in the sea, and I was very sorry about a certain Torah scholar who was on it and [must have] drowned. When I arrived at the province of Kapotkeya, I saw him, that he was sitting before me and asking questions. I said to him: ‘My son, how did you ascend from the sea?’ He said: ‘Rabbi, due to your prayer, each wave cast me to another, and another to another until they caused me to reach dry land.’ I said to him: ‘My son, what deeds do you have to your credit?’ He said: ‘When I boarded the ship, a certain unfortunate man encountered me. He said to me: Perform charity for me, and I gave him a loaf. He said to me: Just as you gave me my life with your gift, so may your life be given to you.’ I read in his regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” There was an incident involving a certain large ship that set sail in the Mediterranean Sea. The wind took hold of it and brought it to a place where there was no flowing water. When they realized that they were in serious trouble, they said: Let us share our supplies. If we die, all of us will die. If we live, all of us will live. The Omnipresent enlightened their eyes and they took a goat, roasted it, and suspended it on the west side of the ship. A great beast came after its aroma and began dragging [the ship] until it cast it into flowing water and they traveled on. When they arrived and entered Rome, they recounted the incident to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua. They read in their regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” Bar Kappara was digging on the coast at Caesarea. He saw a ship that had sunk in the sea and a governor ascending from it unclothed. When [bar Kappara] saw him, he approached him, inquired after his welfare, and gave him two sela. What [else] did he do? He took him into his house, fed him, gave him to drink, and gave him an additional three sela. He said to him: ‘A prominent man like you will [need to] spend an additional three sela.’ Sometime later, Jews were incarcerated in Safefasa. They said: ‘Who will go and appease [the authorities] on our behalf?’ They said to each other: ‘Bar Kappara, as he is esteemed by the government.’ He said to them: ‘You know that this kingdom does nothing for free.’ They said to him: ‘There are five hundred dinars here; take them and appease them on our behalf.’ He took five hundred dinars and ascended to the governmental authorities. When the governor saw him, [the governor] stood on his feet and inquired after his welfare. [The governor] said to him: ‘Why did the Rabbi trouble himself to come here?’ [Bar Kappara] said to him: ‘I am requesting from you that you have mercy on these Jews.’ [The governor] said to him: ‘You know that this kingdom does nothing for free.’ [Bar Kappara] said to him: ‘I have with me five hundred dinars. Take them and be appeased in our regard.’ [The governor] said to him: ‘Let these dinars be payment to you for the five sela that you gave me, and [the members of] your nation will be freed in exchange for the food and the drink that you fed me and gave me to drink in your house, and go you in peace, with great honor.’ They read in his regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua was strolling on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. He saw a ship that was being tossed in the sea, and in an instant, it sank along with everything that was on it. He saw one man who was sitting on one of the planks of the ship. [His plank was tossed] from one wave to another; he ascended to dry land when he was naked, and he hid on the seacoast. It was the season when Jews ascend to Jerusalem for the pilgrimage festival. He said to them: ‘I am from the descendants of Esau your brother. Give me some minimal garments, and I will cover my nakedness, as the sea stripped me bare and I was left with nothing.’ They said to him: ‘May your entire nation be stripped bare in this manner.’ He lifted his eyes and saw Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua strolling among them. He said: ‘I see that you are an elderly and respected man in your nation, and you are wise in the ways of the dignity of people. Perform charity for me and give me a covering, for the sea stripped me bare.’ Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua had on him seven cloaks. He removed one and gave it to him. He led him to his house, fed him, gave him to drink, gave him two hundred dinars, transported him fourteen parasangs, and accorded him great honor until he brought him into his [own] house. Sometime later, the evil emperor died, and they appointed a king in his place. He decreed on that province that all the men were to be executed and all the women to be plundered. They said to Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua: ‘Go and appease them on our behalf.’ He said to them: ‘You know that this kingdom does nothing for free.’ They said to him: ‘There are four thousand dinars here; take them and appease them on our behalf.’ He took them and ascended, and stood at the gate of the royal palace. He said to them: ‘Go and say to the king: One Jewish man is standing at the gate and he wishes to ask after the welfare of the king.’ [The king] said: ‘Bring him in.’ When the king saw him, he threw himself off his throne and fell on his face. He said: ‘What business does my master have here, and why did my master trouble himself to come here?’ [Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua] said: ‘It is so you will have mercy on that province and abrogate that decree.’ He said to him: ‘Is there any untruth written in the Torah?’ He said to him: ‘No.’ He said to him: ‘Is it not written in your Torah: “An Amonite and a Moavite shall not enter into the assembly of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 23:4)? Why? “Because they did not greet you with bread and with water” (Deuteronomy 23:5). And it is written: “Do not despise an Edomite, as he is your brother” (Deuteronomy 23:8). Am I not a descendant of Esau your brother? But they did not treat me with kindness. One who violates the Torah incurs liability to be executed.’ Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua said to him: ‘Even though they have incurred liability toward you, pardon them and have mercy on them.’ He said to him: ‘You know that this kingdom does nothing for free.’ He said to him: ‘I have with me four thousand dinars. Take them and have mercy on them.’ He said to him: ‘Let these four thousand be given to you in exchange for the two hundred that you gave me, and the entire province will be pardoned because of you, in exchange for the food and the drink that you fed me and gave me to drink. Go into my treasury and take for yourself seven cloaks of garments in exchange for the cloak that you gave to me. Go in peace to your people, and I will pardon them because of you.’ They read in his regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” There was an incident involving a certain man who each day would take one loaf and cast it into the Mediterranean Sea. One day he went and purchased a fish. He cut it open and found a jewel in it. They said to him: This is the man who received a return for his loaves. They read in his regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” Rabbi Yitzḥak said: There was an incident involving a merchant who was walking along the way along with a certain soldier. As they were walking together they developed a fondness for one another. When they entered the city, [the merchant] brought him in with him, fed him, and gave him to drink. Sometime later this merchant was arrested for selling garments stained with blood. That soldier heard, and he came to him. He said to [the merchant]: ‘What are you doing here?’ [The merchant] recounted the incident to him. [The soldier] said to him: ‘When you go out to be tried, say to them that so-and-so knows to speak in my favor.’ When he went out to be tried, he said: ‘So-and-so knows to speak in my favor.’ They said to [the soldier]: ‘What favorable [considerations] do you know about this [individual]?’ He said to them: ‘The brother of someone who was killed owed me [money], but he did not have anything to give. He gave me his garments, and I gave them to this one to sell them for me.’ They said: ‘A trustworthy one received it from a trustworthy one,’ and he was freed. They read in his regard: “Cast your bread on the surface of the water.” Rabbi Elazar ben Rabbi Simai interpreted it regarding Abraham our patriarch. The Holy One blessed be He said to him: You said: “I will take a loaf of bread [and you shall sustain your heart]” (Genesis 18:5); by your life, I will repay your descendants in the wilderness, in the settlement, and in the future. In the wilderness, as it is stated: “Behold I will rain bread down to you from the heavens” (Exodus 16:4). In the settlement, as it is stated: “A land of wheat and barley” (Deuteronomy 8:8). And in the future as it is stated: “There will be an abundance of grain in the land” (Psalms 72:16). You said: “And wash your feet” (Genesis 18:4); by your life, I will repay your descendants in the wilderness, in the settlement, and in the future. In the wilderness, as it is stated: “I will wash you in water…” (Ezekiel 16:9). In the settlement, as it is stated: “Wash and be purified” (Isaiah 1:16). And in the future as it is stated: “When the Lord will have washed away the excrement of the daughters of Zion” (Isaiah 4:4). You said: “Please let a little water be taken” (Genesis 18:4); by your life, I will repay your descendants in the wilderness, in the settlement, and in the future. In the wilderness, as it is stated: “Arise, well, [give voice for it]” (Numbers 21:17). In the settlement, as it is stated: “A land of streams of water…” (Deuteronomy 8:7). And in the future as it is stated: “It will be on that day, the mountains will drip nectar and the hills will flow with milk; all the streams of Judah will flow with water…” (Joel 4:18). You said: “Recline under the tree” (Genesis 18:4); by your life, I will repay your descendants in the wilderness, in the settlement, and in the future. In the wilderness, as it is stated: “He spread a cloud for a screen” (Psalms 105:39). In the settlement, as it is stated: “You shall dwell in booths seven days; every native in Israel shall dwell in booths” (Leviticus 23:42). And in the future as it is stated: “It will be a shelter for shade by day…” (Isaiah 4:6).

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years arrive when you will say: I have no desire in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1). “Remove anger from your heart” (Ecclesiastes 11:10) – Rabbi Levi said: Every lad is hot-tempered, and every hot-tempered one is a fool. Solomon said: Since “childhood and youth are vanity” (Ecclesiastes 11:10), therefore, “remember your Creator [in the days of your youth].” We learned: Akavya ben Mahalalel says: Reflect on three matters: From where you came – from a putrid secretion; to where you are going – to a place of dust, maggots, and worms; and before whom are you destined to give an account and a reckoning – before the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi of Sikhnin said: Akavya expounded the three of them from one word: Borekha, be’erkha, boraakha. Borekha, your pit, this is a putrid secretion; be’erkha, your well, this is maggots and worms; and boraakha, your Creator, this is the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He. That is why it is stated: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” – when you are still in possession of your strength; “before the evil days come” – these are the days of old age; “and the years arrive [when you will say: I have no desire in them]” – this is suffering. Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Neḥemya said: These are the messianic times, when there is neither merit nor liability.

It was in the days [of Aḥashveirosh, he was Aḥashveirosh]: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korḥa said, "Because he darkened the faces of Israel like the sides of a pot." Rabbi B'rekhya said, "Because he withered the head of Israel with fasting and affliction." Rabbi Levi said, "Because he made them drink gall and wormwood." Rabbi Yuda son of Rabbi Simon said, "Because he tried to destroy the roots of Israel". Rabbi Taḥlifa son of Bar Ḥana said, "Because he was the brother of a leader, the brother of Nevukhadnetzar." Could he have been his brother? Wasn't one a Chaldean and another a Median? But one suspended work on the Temple and the other destroyed it, so Scripture considers them equivalent. So is it said, "Also one one lazy in his work is a brother to the destroyer." (Proverbs 18:9) "Also one lazy in his work" - this is Aḥashveirosh who suspended work on the Temple. "A brother to the destroyer" - this is Nevukhadnetzar who destroyed the Temple. Another interpretation: Of Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Neḥemia one said "Aḥashveirosh" - that he killed his wife because of his friend, "He was Aḥashveirosh" - that he killed his friend because of his wife. Rabbi Neḥemia said, "Aḥashveirosh" - that he suspended work on the Temple, "He was Aḥashveirosh" - that decreed it be rebuilt. Did he decree that it be rebuilt? Didn't Koresh decree that? It is written, "In the first year of King Koresh." (Ezra 6:3) In the days of the Prophet Ezra there were those in the cities who worshipped him like an idol. In their foolishness all his counselors came to him and said, "Your father decreed that it not be rebuilt and you decree that it be rebuilt?! Can a king cancel the decrees of the most high!" He said to them, "Bring me copies of the decrees". They brought them to him at once, as it is said "It was found in Aḥm'ta in the capitol" (Ezra 6:2). What was written in it? "Therefore make a decree to stop" (Ezra 4:21) He said to them, "Does it say forever? It only said 'until a decree is made by me.' Who can tell me that if my father were alive he would not have built it?" That is why he is included among the prophets, as it is said, "The elders of the Jews built and prospered etc." (Ezra 6:14)

The fool vents all his spirit, and the wise will soothe it, restraining it” (Proverbs 29:11). “The fool vents all his spirit” – this is Aḥashverosh; “and the wise will soothe it, keeping it back” – this is the Holy One, blessed be He, who soothes Aḥashverosh. That is what you said: “Who stills the raging seas, the raging waves, and the tumult of the peoples” (Psalms 65:8). “With his display of the wealth of his glorious kingdom, and the honor of his splendid majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days” (Esther 1:4). “Of the wealth of his glorious kingdom” – the school of Rabbi Yannai and Ḥizkiyya both said that he [Aḥashverosh] would open [his treasury] and display six treasures each day. Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said: He showed them various types of expenditures. Rabbi Yuda son of Rabbi Simon said: He showed them the feast of the Land of Israel. Rabbi Levi said: He showed them the vestments of the High Priest. Here it is stated: “His splendid [tiferet] majesty” and there it is stated: “You shall make holy vestments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for splendor [tiferet]” (Exodus 28:2). Just as tiferet stated there refers to the vestments of the High Priest, so does tiferet stated here refer to the vestments of the High Priest. Rabbi Berekhya said in the name of Rabbi Ḥelbo: The raven flaunts both what is its own and what is not its own. From where did that wicked one become wealthy? Rabbi Tanḥuma said: Nebuchadnezzar, may he be crushed and obliterated, gathered all the riches of the world, and he was possessive of his riches. When he was dying, he said: Shall I leave all these riches to Evil [Merodakh, his son]? He immediately decreed that great bronze ships be built; he filled them with riches, dug and buried them adjacent to the Euphrates, and diverted the Euphrates over them. On the day that Cyrus arose and decreed that the Temple will be built, the Holy One blessed be He exposed them; that is what is written: “So said the Lord to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I held to subdue nations before him…and gates will not be shut” (Isaiah 45:1), and it is written thereafter: “I will give you treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places…” (Isaiah 45:3).

"Then the king consulted the sages learned in procedure (Esther 1:13)": who were they? Rabbi Simon said: "This was the tribe of Issachar. See! It is written: "Of the Issacharites, men who knew how to interpret the signs of the times, to determine how Israel should act; their chiefs were 200, and all their kinsmen followed them (1 Chronicles 12:33)"". Rabbi Tanchuma said: "For the calendar". And Rabbi Jose son of Katzrat said: "For intercalation". "To determine how Israel should act": because they knew how to heal skin ailments. "Their chiefs were 200": these were the 200 heads of the Sanhedrins which arose from the tribe of Issachar. "And all their kinsmen followed them": and all of them agreed in their halakhah with the halakhah of Moses from Sinai. That evil man said to them: "Because I made a decree for Vashti that she come before me naked and she did not come, what is the judgment for her?". They said to him: "Our lord king, when we were in our land we were asking the urim and tummim and now were are shaken", and they read before him this verse: "Moab has been secure from his youth on— He is settled on his lees And has not been poured from vessel to vessel— He has never gone into exile. Therefore his fine flavor has remained And his bouquet is unspoiled (Jeremiah 48:11)". He said to them: "Is there one from that country [Moab]?". They said to him: "Their relations (qariveihon)". See! It says this: "His closest advisers (haqqarov) were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven ministers of Persia and Media (Esther 1:14)". "The righteous man is rescued from trouble, and the wicked man takes his place (Proverbs 11:18)". ""The righteous man is rescued from trouble": this is the tribe of Issachar. "And the wicked man takes his place": these are "the seven ministers of Persia and Media". Another interpretation: "His closest advisers": it is written: "The impious man destroys his neighbor through speech, but through their knowledge the righteous are rescued (Proverbs 11:9)". "The impious man destroys his neighbor through speech": these are "the seven ministers of Persia and Media". "But through their knowledge the righteous are rescued": this is the portion of Issachar. Another interpretation: "His closest advisers": it is written: "A wise man is diffident and shuns evil, but a dullard rushes in confidently (Proverbs 14:16)". ""A wise man is diffident and shuns evil": this is the tribe of Issachar. "But a dullard rushes in confidently": these are "the seven ministers of Persia and Media". Another interpretation: "His closest advisers": it is written: "The shrewd man saw trouble and took cover; the simple kept going and paid the penalty (Proverbs 22:3)". "The shrewd man saw trouble and took cover": this is the tribe of Issachar. "The simple kept going and paid the penalty": these are "the seven ministers of Persia and Media".

Rabbi Azariah began his sermon: "Do not ogle that red wine as it lends its color to the cup, as it flows on smoothly (Proverbs 23:31)". Rabbi Azariah said: ""Do not ogle that red wine": because one will covet the blood of a menstruating woman and the blood of a woman with a flow. "As it lends its color to the cup (bakkos)": bakkis ("in a bag") is written as a euphemism, and this verse agreeing says: "We shall all have a common purse (kis) (Proverbs 1:14)". "As it flows on smoothly": in the end, his wife speaks to him: "I saw [a mark] like a red rose", and he does not refrain from her". Rabbi Asei said: "If he is a wise student, at the end he makes clean the contaminated and contaminates the clean". Another interpretation: "Do not ogle that red wine": it definitely reddens him. "As it lends its color ('eyno) to the cup": he fixes his eyes (eynav) on the cup; the bartender fixes his eyes on the purse (bakkis) [hence explaining what is written]. "As it flows on smoothly (meisharim)": in the end he will empty out (meisher'a) his house. He says: "What does this ladle of bronze do? What does a ladle of clay do?" and he sells it and he drinks wine with its price. And [he says]: "What does this pot of bronze do? What does a pot of clay do?" and he sells it and he drinks wine with its price. Rabbi Yitzchak son of Radifah said in the name of Rabbi Amei: "In the end he sells all the furnishings of his house and drinks wine with them". Rabbi Acha said: "There is a story about a certain man who sold all the furnishings of his house and drank wine with them, and his children said to him: "This old man drink away everything and then die? What do we do? Let us get him alcohol and get him drunk and prepare him for burial and lay him out in the cemetery". They did that, and left him in the cemetery. The wine merchants were passing by that cemetery and they heard that that province's taxes were being collected so they abandoned their wineskins in the cemetery. When the man woke up he saw wineskins piled around his head. He took it and began to drink. His children said three days later: "Let us go and see how our father is". They came and found him drinking! They said: "See how your Creator cares for you. This is your fate from heaven, and we do not know what do do with you!". His children decided that a different one each day would give him a drink. It is written: "You will be like one lying in bed on high seas, like one lying on top of the rigging (Provers 23:34)". You will be like one lying in bed on high seas"

"Happy are those who act justly, who do right at all times (Psalms 106:3): they were counting a vote in the upper room of Rabbi Tarfon and they said: "What is this person "who does right at all times"? If you say they are the scribes and teachers of the mishnah, do they not eat, do they not drink, do they not sleep? Or rather those who write tefillin and mezuzot, do they not eat, do they not drink, do they not sleep? What is this person "who does right at all times"? There are some who say that this is the one who raises the orphan in his own home. Could you say to that that he turns to and fro naked in the night?" They said: "We have need for the Moadite". Rabbi Eleazar the Moasite came and he taught: "The Torah did not say that, but rather the piece of bread which he eats within his house". Another opinion: "Happy are those who act justly, who do right at all times (Psalms 106:3): this is Mordechai "who did right at all times" as he raised an orphan girl in his own home. David said before the Holy One, blessed be He: "Master of the universe, "Be mindful of me, Hashem, when You favor Your people (Psalms 106:4)" you who will cause deliverance for Israel by the hand of Mordechai and Esther, at the time when Haman seeks to destroy Israel and weighs out 10,000 bars of silver for the hands of those who do the work for Achashverosh, as it is written: "And I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the stewards for deposit in the royal treasury (Esther 3:9)". And what is written right there? "Lived a Jew (Esther 2:5)".

[Esther 6:1] "That night the sleep of the king wandered" - Heaven's [sleep] wandered. This is the throne of the King of all kings, the Holy One , blessed be He, who saw Israel in sorrow. And is there sleep in relation to the Omnipresent? Does it not already say (Psalms 121:4) "Behold, he does not slumber, nor sleep, He guards Israel"? Rather, [God is only asleep] in a time when Israel is embroiled in distress, and the nations of the world are in peace, and therefore it says, (Psalms 44:24) "Awake! Why do You sleep, O God?" "The sleep of the king wandered" - Ahashverosh, for he saw in his dream Haman drawing a sword to kill him. He panicked and awoke from his sleep. He said to his scribe: Bring me the book of chronicles, to read and to see what happened to him. And the scribes began, and they found the matter of Mordechai informing about Bigtan and Teresh. And once they said to the king, "Behold, Haman is standing in the courtyard," the king said, "What I saw in my dream was true! He has only come at this time to kill me."
