One should not put on his under-garment from a sitting position (Tur), but should rather take his under-garment and insert into it his (head and) arms while he is still lying down, with the result that when he gets up he is [already] covered.

The Laws of the Holiness of a Synagogue (containing 12 S'ifim): In a synagogue or house of study, one may not behave frivolously; for example: laughter, sarcasm, or idle conversation. One should not eat or drink in them, nor should one groom oneself in them or strolling around in them. One should not enter them in summer due to [seeking shelter from] the sun, nor in the rainy season due to [seeking shelter from] the rain. Torah scholars and their students are permitted to eat and drink in them out of necessity. (And there are those who say that in a house of study, it is permissible even when it is not out of necessity) (Ran, [on] chapter "B'nai Ha-ir" [i.e. Talmud Megillah, Chapter 4]). No monetary calculations should be made there unless they are for the purpose of a mitzvah; for example, collecting money for tz'dakah, or for the redemption of captives. And we do not deliver eulogies in them unless would be for a eulogy for one of the prominent members of the city, for all the people assemble and come to eulogize [such a person]. If one must enter there for one's own needs; for example, to call someone - one should enter and read a little or say a word of [Torah], and after that, call [the person] so that it should not appear as if one has entered for one's own needs. And if one doesn't know how to read or repeat [e.g., a mishnah], one should say to one of the children: "recite a verse that you are learning for me", or one should delay there for a bit, and [only] after that, leave, because sitting among them is a mitzvah, as it says "praiseworthy are those who dwell in Your house". (And the amount of sitting time corresponds to [the time is takes for] walking [the width of] two doorways.) (According to the opinion of "those that explain" in siman 90 at the end of s'if 20) (Mordechai at the beginning of chapter "HaShut'fin" [Bava Batra, Chapter 1]).

To Not Destroy Any Synagogue. Containing 1 Se'if: We do not destroy a synagogue in order to build another synagogue lest something befall them such that they do not build the other; rather we build the other first, and afterwards we destroy the old. (And even if they only want to destroy one wall to widen [the synagogue], this ruling applies (Rabbeinu Yerucham 53:5 and Beis Yosef in the name of the Rambam].) And this refers to if the first is strong; but if its foundations are weakened or its walls are likely to fall, we destroy it immediately, and quickly begin to build, day and night, lest time becomes pressing and it remains destroyed. Rem"a: And it is forbidden to take stones from the old synagogue to build a new one. And it is forbidden to destroy anything from the synagogue unless it done in order to build. (Mordechi - chapter "B'nei Ha'ir")

Laws of Articles of Holiness and Synagogue Lights. Containing 15 Se'ifim: [Regarding] a town square, even though they pray there on fast days - it has no holiness, because [the praying] is occasional; and likewise houses and courtyards in which people gather and pray sometimes (meaning by happenstance and chance, but not in a set way), they do not have any holiness. Rem"a: And some say that it is only called a holy ark if it is like a type of box that is only made for the honor of the Torah. But an ark that is built into a wall made for storage is not called an article of holiness - and all the more so, if the scrolls deteriorate in it, it is permissible to take it from there (Mordechi and Hagahot Ashiri in Perek B'nei Ha'ir).

To go from the Synagogue to the House of Study. Containing 2 Se'ifim After he leaves the synagogue, he should go to the house of study and establish a time to study [Torah]. And it is necessary that this time be fixed, such that he does not skip it even if he believes he can earn a lot [of money]. Rem"a: And even one who does not know how to study should walk to the house of study, and he will have the reward for walking [there]; or he should establish a place and study a little of what he knows and think about his ways and [by doing so] bring fear of the Heaven into his heart (R"i in the first chapter of Berachot).

The Arrangement of Buying and Selling (ie. How One Should Conduct Themselves in Business). Containing 1 Se'if: Afterwards he should go to his work because any Torah that does not have work with it will end up becoming null and will cause sin because the poverty will remove from him knowledge of his Creator. Nevertheless, he should not make his work primary, but rather temporary, and his Torah permanent; and [through this] both will be sustained. He should do business honestly and be careful not to mention the name of Heaven in vain, because in every place where the mention of God's name [in vain] is found, death is found. And he should be careful not to take an oath, even in truth, because 1,000 cities belonged to King Yannai and all of them were destroyed because they took oaths, even though they kept them. And he should be careful from partnering with the gentiles, for perhaps [the gentile] will be obligated to take an oath and [the Jew] will violate [the transgression of] "[The names of other gods] should not be heard on your lips." Rem"a: And some are lenient with partnering with gentiles these days because the gentiles nowadays do not take an oath by idols. And even though they mention their foreign god, nevertheless their intention is to the Creator of heaven and earth, except that they associate the name of Heaven with other forces. And we do not find that there is in this [a violation by the Jew of] "Before a blind person you shall not place a stumbling block," because the gentiles are not warned regarding partnership [of God with other forces]. (Ra"n - the end of the first chapter of Avodah Zarah; Rabbeinu Yerucham - netiv 17, chelek 5; Tosafot - beginning of the first chapter of Bechorot). And to do business with them without partnering, all agree is permitted, except on the day of their festivals. (Hagahot Maimoni - first chapter of the Laws of Idol Worship). And see Yoreh Deah on the Laws of Idol Worship chapter 147.)

Laws of When To Establish One's Meal. Containing 1 Se'if: When the fourth hour [of the day] arrives, one should establish his meal. And if he is a Torah scholar and he is occupied with his learning, he should wait until the sixth hour, but he should not delay more than that for it is considered like throwing a stone into a [wine] pouch if he did not eat anything that morning.

When one comes to eat bread that we bless on it "HaMotzi", one should wash their hands, even if one does not know that [your hands] have any impurity, one should bless: "al n'tilat yadayim"/"regarding washing of hands". But bread that we do not bless "HaMotzi" on it, for example, little rolls, (explanation: satorti in another language), or bread that comes as dumplings (explanation: bread that is made with sugar, almonds, and nuts), and one does not establish a meal with them, one does not need to wash their hands.

Which vessels can you wash your hands with and how to pour the water on your hands. 26 parts: Only wash your hands with a vessel. All vessels are kosher for this, even galalim vessels [vessels made from cow feces and dust ], stone vessels, and earthenware vessels. The vessel must be able to hold a reviis of liquid. If there is a hole/crack in the vessel [that is, if you put the vessel in liquid, the liquid will enter it through the crack and that crack is bigger than a crack that lets water out], then the vessel is no longer considered a vessel and you shouldn't use it to wash your hands. This is so even if the vessel could hold a reviis of liquid below the crack.

Which water is kosher or not for washing your hands with: Water that has had it's appearance changed doesn't work to wash your hands with, whether from itself or from something that fell into it or from it's location.

Raising and rubbing the hands during hand washing. Containing 10 paragraphs: One who washes their hands must raise them (meaning the fingertips) upward so that the water does not flow past the wrist joint and return to defile the hands. Gloss: The same applies if one lowers them from the start of washing to the end — that is also valid — but one must be careful not to first raise the fingertips and then lower them, because then the water would flow past the wrist and return to defile the hands (Beit Yosef in the name of Maharai ibn Haviv). This applies when one does not wash the entire hand up to where the hand meets the forearm, but if one washes up to that point, there is no need to raise the hands (and some disagree). Similarly, if one poured a revi'it (a specific measure) over both hands at once, since there are no impure waters at all, there is no need to raise the hands. Similarly, one who immerses their hands need not raise them. (Some say that if one pours three times there is no need to be careful about all this, and this is the lenient custom) (Agur in the name of Or Zarua and Hagahot Asheiri, ch. 25.)

Law regarding one who has no water and feeds others. Comprising two sections: If water is not available to him within four mils ahead of him or one mil behind him, he should wipe his hands with a cloth and eat bread or food that has been dipped in liquid (or eat using a spoon).

That one may make a condition regarding handwashing. 2 sections: A person may wash his hands in the morning and stipulate that the washing covers him for the entire day, even not in a time of pressing need, provided he does not have a lapse of attention regarding them (and does not soil them) (Tur). If water is readily available it is good to wash again, but he should not recite a blessing. Rema: The stipulation is only effective for washing that is not needed for eating, similar to the morning handwashing; but if one is washing for the purpose of eating, a stipulation does not help for that washing. The place and time of breaking the bread, and who breaks it – containing 20 sections: One should break the bread at the place where it is well baked. (And with our bread, one should break it on the side of the loaf and cut slightly from the top and bottom—Hagahot Maimoni, chapter 7 of Hilchot Berachot). He should cut the piece to be broken, and he must cut it slightly, so that if he were to hold the slice, the rest of the loaf would be lifted with it. For if not, it is considered as already sliced. He should leave it attached to the loaf and begin the blessing, and after he concludes the blessing, he should separate it—so that the blessing concludes while the bread is still whole. And he should not break off a piece that is too small, because that appears stingy, nor a piece larger than the size of a kebeitza (an egg), because that appears gluttonous. Rema: On Shabbat, one should not cut the loaf before the blessing, so that the loaves remain whole (Tosafot and Mordechai, chapter "Keitzad Mevarchin"). Nevertheless, if he forgot and cut it as on a weekday, it is not harmful (Mordechai). And it seems that the restriction not to break more than a kebeitza applies only on weekdays and when eating alone, but on Shabbat or when eating with many people—and he must give each person a kezayit—it is permitted to break off as much as needed. On which types of bread the blessing is said. Pieces of bread and a whole bread were before him, all from one kind – he recites the blessing on the whole one, even if it is a coarse (meaning: bread that isn't pure) and small bread and the pieces are pure bread and large. But if the whole one is barley and the pieces are from wheat, even if it is small, he places the piece under the whole one and breaks from both of them together. Rema: And all this is when he wants to eat from both of them. But if he only wants to eat from one, he should break on it and should not be concerned for the second one, even though it's valuable or liked by him (Terumat HaDeshen, No. 32).

Anything that is brought before a person that has a fragrance and the person desires it, one must give from it to the meal attendant immediately. And it is a pious practice to give to him immediately from every type. And one should not give to him while the cup is in his hand or in the hand of the host. [And this is specifically regarding the attendant, but regarding another person at the meal, it is permitted to give in this manner.] R' Yonah, chapter "Elu Devarim." Rules of proper conduct that a person should observe during a meal. Containing 22 paragraphs: One should not converse during a meal, lest the windpipe precede the esophagus (i.e., food goes down the wrong way). Even if someone sneezes during a meal, it is forbidden to say "health!" to him. If people were reclining at a meal and one of them went out to urinate, he washes one hand that he wiped with, and he only washes in front of everyone so they do not suspect him of not having washed. Rema: And if he did not wipe, he does not wash at all unless he touched a soiled place. But if he relieved himself, he certainly requires washing. This applies to drinking, but for eating he washes even outside [their view], for they know that his mind is troubled (meaning that he is anxious and confused) and he will not eat without washing. And if he spoke with his companion and became engrossed [in conversation], he washes both his hands since he became distracted. Rema: And this requirement of washing for drinking applies only in the middle of the meal, for we are concerned that perhaps he will eat. But otherwise, washing is not required for drinking.

A person can use bread as they need to, as long as they do not ruin it, but they may not ruin it. Therefore, one may not leave raw meat on bread or pass a full cup over it, not lean a bowl on it… and do not use wine even for a mitzvah like hand-washing. And do not throw bread because it is disgrace to food. And just as one may not throw bread, so too it is prohibited to throw any food that will become distasteful as a result.

Things that come during the meal and after the meal — what is their law. Containing 5 sections: Things that come during the meal — if they are things that come on account of the meal, meaning things that are typically eaten as part of a fixed meal to accompany the bread, such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, cheese, porridge, and various salted foods — even if one eats them without bread they do not require a blessing beforehand, as the HaMotzi exempts them, nor afterward, as Grace After Meals exempts them. If they are things that do not come on account of the meal, meaning things that are not typically eaten as part of a fixed meal to accompany the bread, such as figs, grapes, and all kinds of fruit (see above 168:8) — if one eats them without bread they require a blessing beforehand, as HaMotzi does not exempt them since they are not part of the main meal; but they do not require a blessing afterward, since having come during the meal, Grace After Meals exempts them. If at the beginning of his eating he ate the fruits with bread, and at the end he ate bread with them, then even if in the interim he ate some without bread, they do not require a blessing even beforehand.

Containing 7 paragraphs: If one was eating in one house and interrupted his meal and went to another house, or if he was eating and his friend called him to speak with him and he went out to the entrance of his house and returned — since he changed his location he must recite a blessing retroactively for what he already ate, and then recite HaMotzi again and complete his meal. But if his friend spoke with him inside the house, even if he changed his spot from corner to corner, he need not recite a blessing again. Which things are considered a lapse of attention during a meal requiring a new blessing. 6 sections: If one finished his meal and washed his hands with the final waters, he may not eat or drink until he recites Grace After Meals. If he said "let us say the blessing" this constitutes a lapse of attention and he may not drink unless he first recites a blessing over it. Eating has the same law as drinking according to the Rosh; but according to Rabbeinu Yonah and the Ran, eating is different — even though he withdrew from eating, and even if the table was removed, if he wishes to return to eating he need not recite a blessing again, since as long as he has not washed his final waters he has not fully withdrawn from eating.

How (do they abbreviate the grace after meals)? (They recite) the first blessing as established and the second they begin with "the blessing on the land" then include in it "He who builds Jerusalem" and conclude with "the blessing on the land". They do not recite the blessing of "The one who is Good and does good" at all. In what circumstances does this apply? When they are receiving payment for their work besides the meal (they are provided with). However, if they are not taking payment but rather are only provided with the meal they eat, they should recite all four blessings as established. Laws of One Who Interrupts in Order to Bless — 2 paragraphs. Three people who ate together: one is obligated, even against his will, to interrupt for the two others and recite with them the zimun blessing. Even if he does not want to interrupt, they may perform zimun with him whether he responds or not, as long as he is still present. But two people are not obligated to interrupt for one, therefore the obligation of zimun does not take effect until they agree to interrupt for the one and to bless. If they do not wish to interrupt and he performs zimun with them, he accomplishes nothing. And if they do not wish to interrupt, he is also not permitted to bless and go out to the market until the two have finished and he performs zimun with them — for he has already become obligated in zimun, so how can he bless without zimun?

We bless Creator of the fruits of the tree upon all arboreal produce at the outset, aside from wine, upon which we bless Creator of the fruits of the vine, whether the wine is raw or diluted, or whether it was spiced, in which honey and/or peppers are placed within the wine. Rema: And if wine was mixed in to beer, we go after the majority: if the majority of the mixture is wine, one blesses "Blessed is the Creator of the fruit of the vine"; and if the majority of the mixture is beer, one blesses "Blessed is the One through Whose Word everything was created".

For vegetables, one recites the blessing Borei Pri Ha’adamah (Who creates the fruit of the ground), even if they are raw. Similarly, for all fruits and legumes that are good both raw and cooked, one recites the same blessing after cooking as was appropriate before cooking. However, for gourds, beets, cabbage, and similar vegetables that are better when cooked than when raw, one recites Shehakol (Who creates everything) when they are raw, and Borei Pri Ha’adamah after they are cooked. Garlic and leeks, when raw, require Borei Pri Ha’adamah, but after being cooked, one recites Shehakol. Rema: Since they are considered to have deteriorated through cooking, even if they were cooked with meat and thereby improved, their improvement is not due to their own essence but because of the meat. (R”Y, Chapter Keitzad Mevarchin).
